Friend of mine burnt up his 029. I'm thinking about putting one of those $89 Hutzl 039 motors on it. For curiosity if nothing else.

Does anybody know if that stock carburetor will tune up to the larger displacement ?

Im in the same boat i just rebuilt my ms290 (overheated seals went bad) ordered a 290 kit from hl supply with bearings and seals got the cheapest kit under $100.
Then turned around and had them send me a high end kit for the 390 haven't needed it yet but have it sitting on the shelf for when i do.

As far as the MS290/MS390 is concerned, the MS290 carb is different than both the MS310/MS390. MS310/MS390 can use the same carb.

Well fooey. I guess I can just build it back as an 029/MS290.

I'm not sure what  happens if you use a 49MM engine and a carb for a 47MM engine??

What is the difference? Narrower venturi on the 290 carburettor?

Looking at part numbers to find any differences you find that the throttle shutters are the same on HD 18, 19 and 21. What is different is the fixed jet. The MS290 uses one number and the MS310, 390 use another. When it gets to tuning the engine the MS290 should not go beyond 12500 RPM's and the MS310/390 can go up to 13000 RPM's. All the above is for MS saws and may not apply to 029, 039.

For the 029-039 it shows a HD18, 19, and 5 . The fixed jet in the 18 and 19 is the same part number. The 5 is different. But, it does not tell the size of the jets or which saw the different carbs are for. I have an idea there is enough needle adjustment to make it work since it was made before the EPA made chainsaws their hobby.

Only difference in the carbs is that the 290 has a 0.56 jet and the 390 a 0.58 jet. A sinple job for a safety pin with a bent end.

     Howdy,
   I don't know if you've seen these http://www.baileysonline.com/Chainsaw-Parts/Chainsaw-Cylinder-Assemblies/NWP-Cylinder-Assemblies-for-Stihl-Chainsaws/NWP-49mm-Short-Block-Cylinder-for-Stihl-Chainsaws-029-039-MS290-MS310-MS390.axd
I developed these for Bailey's a while back. They're all sealed up and ready to drop in. 1 year warranty. A lot of these have been done, no need to mess with the carb.

Thanks Gregg, I like the warranty.

I have rebuilt a bunch of the 1127 series saws and have never had any issues swapping carbs in all directions. ie, smaller to larger, larger to smaller, etc. I use the Huztl kits in most cases to upgrade the saw to the 039/MS390 if it needs any engine work. The only issues I've seen is some of the carbs have the snorkel and some don't. Easily switched out to match the air filter.
I also mod the mufflers when redoing these saws and usually (but not always) have to pull the limiters on the carbs to get a proper tune.
Don't overthink the carb thing. IF you have an 029, upgrade it if it needs work and the carb that came on will work fine. No rejet required in my opinion. As long as you can get it to four stroke, you're good to go. Between the 029, 029S, 039, MS290, MS310 and MS390 there are very minute differences. The biggest change between the 0 series and the MS series are the flippy caps and the rear handle and airfilter covers are slightly different and can't be mixed and matched. I have about 10 of these saws in my shop right now in various stages of the process. (Some all apart and some ready to sale)
Too many chainsaws, not enough wood.
