Hard starting Stihl 044

Cut some wood today and my buddy was having problems with his 044. The pull cord wouldn't catch to start the saw. It took about twenty tries to get it to go. Wondering if anybody could point us in the right direction. The recoil always brought the cord back, it just wouldn't catch.

Could be starter pawls worn and recoil not grabbing them consistently to to turn flywheel. Search for a Stihl 044 IPL and you can see pics.

Starter pawl is not engaging. The pawl itself could be broken or the spring. Easy fix though.

I'm not sure what the temps are in Fulton at the time the rewind acted up, but snow and icing up conditions can cause the problems with the pawls sticking.
