My 272 doesn't seem to hold rpm very well and doesn't buzz or sound right in the cut. Starts good, has plenty of compression. Plug change didn't help. Wonder if it could be the coil, ignition module or a short someplace.

Sounds like the carburetor needs cleaning

My 1993 272 which is still brand new with only 5 tanks through it started to do the same similar situation as you explained.
I changed its 21 year old carburetor diaphragms and it runs like a trooper again.
