I have 17 acres of mature mixed hardwoods in western NY on the PA border and I recently discovered that some of my cherry trees have black knot. I want to be able to salvage the timber and cut any infected trees before they all get it. I guess my question is ,is there a bad time to cut it where I may actually be spreading it ,or is it an asap kind of thing? Also do I have to burn the infected branches and leaves or can I just pile them to rot. I am going to the property this weekend and I plan to drop a few and stack them for transport. The infected trees are about 20 DBH. There are some bigger ones that aren't infected yet and I want to prevent that from happening. I hope thi isn't a bigger problem than I am aware of.

       Thanks for any input.
