The housing of the saw is cracked where the starter assembly bolts on. Any ideas for fixing it?

It's the body of the saw that's cracked, not the pullrope assembly. I am thinking about patching it with aluminum and pop rivets. Welding is out because it's magnesium and too expensive.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

My only thoughts would be to roughen it up a tad and then use something like JB Weld and maybe while it is still wet put a patch of something over it and then rivet.
Give me a new saw chain and I can find you a rock in a heartbeat.

If you can get a hold of this stuff, it really works and is not that expensive by the rod, if you can find somewhere to buy it like that, and you can use a propane torch.

Somewhat familiar with the brazing rod, but it's not a high strength application to my understanding.

Mr. Rivets and I are on the same road.

Tensile...............................................45,000 psi

I'd say that is more than sufficient.
