what is the easy way (simplest) of doing a timber cruise

clearcut

The simplest - have someone with a lot of experience walk through the stand and make an educated estimate of the volume, value, or variables that you want to know.

This takes a lot of trust in the estimator.

After that, it depends on what you need to know, and how accurately you need to know it.

keppoch - Those answers may seem short and over simplistic but until there is more information - location, reason for cruise, area (size) to be cruised and acceptable tolerance levels - you're never going to get a more thorough answer.

There are minimum standards to be met depending upon the degree of accuracy desired. Consult with a forester.

by all means get a forester.
Nothing against loggers/buyers but they have their interests at hand no matter how honest they are.
A good forester who works for you for a fee, be it hourly or on a commission basis gives you all the cards in your hand that you are entitled to.

No one size fits all answer. A quick walk through the woods many times is enough to justify if a perspective land purchase or a potential timber harvest is worth pursuing.

Basic timber cruising skills can be mastered fairly quickly.

"Log Scaling and Timber Cruising". That book, a two sided loggers tape that reads diameters on one side, and compass will give you all the basics to make reasonable volume estimates. The end use of the cruise information dictates what method is best as does the potential value, size, and variability of the stand.
