I was about to start belt sanding a cedar bench when I remembered that I had bought some scrapers a while back. I figured I would try them out and MAN do they work good! The grain on this cedar was running in all kinds of directions and the scraper just peeled it all down flat with ease. I will definately be using these more often.

I had thought about that as well, but the benchs are big and awkward and I figured I would have a hard time feeding them over the jointer. The scraper then belt sander trick only took about 10 minutes per side on the benchs so it wasnt too bad.

When I was in high school shop class I became quite intimate with the scraper.  I don't think the belt sander had been invented yet. :D

When brand of scraper are you using?  I don't think I've seen one like it.  It's doing a great job.

It came in a set from veritas. It came with the scraper holder http://www.veritastools.com/Products/Page.aspx?p=139 which is probably what looks funny to you. I tried to look up the set but couldnt find it. It came with a hand full of different thickness card scrapers, the holder, burnisher, and jointer. I find an old scraftsman screwdriver makes a better burnisher. And you can joint them with just a flat file. The holder is handy though! The scraper can get hot when you are working it!

The scraper is 6" wide. That was the side of the bench.
