Has anyone have any experience with installing a mantle onto an existing stone wall?  This is for a friends house they bought, wiht two fireplaces.

I have several ideas, using big masonary bolts to anchor some supports, but I have no experience working w/ stone.  Not sure what is even behind the stone.

Happy 4th!!!!

I've had customers who drilled two large horizontal holes in the stone work and cemented in one inch or so diameter pipes sticking out. They then drilled matching holes in the back edge of the mantel. It's a little work, but usually turns out well.
