I know its a bit off the "logging-forestry" topic but anyone who loves big bore engines might like this. Theres a pair of 8-710G7 Emd's. Baby engines but still not bad. 2k-hp each at 900RPM.  9-1/16th bore by 11" of stroke. My new home away from home.

sawguy21

That would run one heck of a mill. :o
old age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm

11671 lb/ft of torque from each engine.  Not bad..... :D
Yooper by trade.

That's sweet! Are they 2 stroke?

Yup. 4 valves per hole. 1 large unit injector. About 10k per hole for a head-and piston-rod assembly. The emd design close to this came out around 1936. The boats landing on the beach on D-day where emd powered. Most people have never seen 1, alot of them still used in locomotives. If your a detroit guy, you sit in awe just watching one of these run. These are baby's, im used to the 16 and 20cyl versions making 6-7-10k hp combined.

LeeB

Those are good size engines, but they are baby ones. EMD makes much bigger than that.

So you work on a Tow Boat to support your logging habit?  I was on a ship in Texas in the 90's and they had a Fairbanks Morse engine. Huge. I was a 2 cycle and ran 180 RPM . They had a lever that changed the timing  and that would reverse the engine and since it was direct drive, the ship. Ran on bunker C. It was an old ship then. Nice pics. I dream vacation would be going through ships and factories.

Thanks for posting the pics.  How much fuel do they burn and what are you carrying on the barge?
Lots of toys for working in the bush

it must have been a big landing craft to use that motor. the smaller ones had 2v 671's. also had a battle setting on the governor that let the motor over turn by quite a lot.  dose that tug your on have pod drive?

A 16 cylinder version of the same kind of EMD. Not nearly as clean though. Power end for one of three generators on an old drilling rig I used to work on.

I think EMD stands for Electro Motive  (or Motor) Division of GM.
They were a main competitor of the outfit I worked for in the mid 50s, Alco Products Inc formerly the American Locomotive Co. in Schenectady NY.
Alco diesels were 4 stroke so quieter.
EMD did make diesel Electric Locomotives as well as engines maybe still do..
They were instrumental in the demise of Alco as my uncle said why buy a Cadillac locomotive when a Chevy will do.

Thats a 16-645 -E6 or could even be a 567BC block. Ive been on alot of blown boats. A 16 blown boat is a Cadillac compared to a turbo boat. Fuel use depends, the big boat I was on in the gulf would blow thru 4800 a day at 850rpm, in no weather. Ive seen what they call the "triple 20's" line haul boats in the Mississippi, they use 10-12k a day making 15k hp. I presently work for a company moving stone down in the city, closer to home and no oil barge headaches. These hold 280 gallons of mobil 409 per side, emd's tend to use about .60-.75 gallons of oil per run hour, depending on how tight and maintained they are. A turbo boat will get 25-35k hours to a repower, blown boats can get 60k hours at most. Yeah this supports my logging equipment addiction, worse ways to make a living.

I was chief on a twin 12 cyl Alco boat, the Valentine Moran years ago. I will take an Emd everyday of the week over an Alco. A turbo on an Alco is a nightmare, dont hold up and can be 75k+ every time you do one. They are abojt gone out here. You wanna see something awesome, look up a fairbanks morse 8-1/8 OP engine. The guys who designed this stuff had their acts together.

The ski area where I used to work had two FB gensets. 1, 200kw. I think the model was FD38. They were 10 cylinder, 20 piston engines making 1,600 hp. I never got to see them run. A friend of mine ran the engines on the Mauna Loa during Vietnam. It had a pair 9 cylinder Nordbergs making 3100. He has a bunch of good stories about the engines on the different ships he was on.

My uncle told me that quality suffered when Alco was bought by Studebaker Worthington in the 70's.
Sounds a little like the Harley Davidson to AMF debacle.
He spent his entire career with Alco, first in Schenectady, then Auburn NY. Dunkirk NY and in Ohio somewhere.
He retired a disillusioned man as regards the company.

When you get into the big bore, slow speed, heavy fuel stuff im kinda lost. I took the bare minimum steam for my license. Theres quite a few OP FM ex navy YTB boats still running around, changes your way of thinking.

Heres a couple of crankshafts out of 8 cylinder Enterprise diesels we scrapped ,12 inch bore 15 inch stroke,400h.p. at 400 rpm each engine weighed 22 tons. It was a shame to scrap them but the repowered the Mt.Washington with 3508 cats with gearboxes. Don
