My wife hired a fellow to do some workaround the house and cut down some trees. He used my saw and long story short, it's now fired. I haven't opened it up, so don't know how bad it is yet. I did take it to the shop and the guy told me it was toast after he pulled the plug and looked in the cylinder. Having never done anything like this before, what am I looking at to get it going again? Any tips on how to get started? I really hate to just junk it. Didn't have that many hours on the poor thing. Not sure how he managed to burn it to start with.

Ouch! Is he gonna pick up the tab on this one? I'd be looking that way. That aside, first thing I'd look at was the gas. Dump it and see if it looks like it was straight gassed. That would be my guess.  From there, depends on the damage within. If just the piston is bad, then you can get away cheap. If not, then there are options varying in cost. Best to see if you can find what killed it first, then see what the damage is from there.

Haven't checked the gas, but suspect that may be the culprit. No chance on getting him to pay. If he had any money he wouldn't have been doing day work for us. He's really not a bad guy and works hard any time we use him. I've let him use my saw before when I was around to monitor him and so Lindy thought it was ok for him to use it. We've since had the discussion that nobody touches my saws unless I personally let them. I did buy two more to replace it.  ;D A 562XP and Stihl 361. I still want to try and salvage this saw. I really liked it for light work. Hopefully it isn't too badly damaged.

Yeah I suppose that would make sense. Still hurts. Good call to make sure the saws don't get touched again without you home. After you check the gas pull off the muffler and look inside. The piston condition should be a good indication of how bad things are. If it's really bad then the cylinder probably is too. I'd be trying to save it too.

It is well worth saving, as it is an excellent 50cc saw, and preferable to your 60cc saws for lighter work!

Like others said, start with figuring out what happened - streight gas, too lean carb settings and air leaks are the most common culprits.

Jumpin' in here. Recently acquired a used 346 xp. I'M IN LOVE. Light, fast, starts right up. I'm a bit impatient, it better start quick, run fast, burn clean. I'm done with the little Stihls, thank you. Suggest you fix this saw, they don't make them anymore. I run a 14" bar for brushing, 18" for firewood. Other love; 2149 Jonsered.

Lee, pull the top cover off, take the carb and muffler off, then you have four allen screws to get the cylinder off. You will have a good idea what gives then.

Pulled it down today. Piston and cylinder are toast. trying to decide if I want to repair with OEM parts or aftermarket. OEM sure are expensive though.  :o

Have you tried to hone the cylinder, those are chromed and may be salvageble... just askin' as I have not seen how bad it is...

Wish I could, but it's pretty badly scored.

If scored all the way around it was straight gassed, if just on the exhaust side it was running lean and you find out why.   steve

I don't know how much an OEM piston and cylinder costs, Bailey's has aftermarket kits that are reasonably priced.

Started on the rebuild yesterday. Found a nick in the fuel tank vent line. So far no other leaks that I can tell. I've replaced all the lines anyway. Will replace the intake boot as well, along with the impulse line. Ran into a snag though. Somehow I managed to break the piston ring while trying to insert it into the jug. Couldn't believe it broke like that. Everything on hold until I get a new one.

U using a spreader or rolling them down over the top?

The ring was already on the piston. It broke while I was compressing it to put the jug over the piston.  ???

My thought too. Really strange that broke though.

Did you have the ring upside down?  As in the pin gap isn't in line with the pin and didn't allow the ring to compress completely? I did this before and it will cause this to happen.

The ring was already installed when the p&c arrived.

Doesn't have to be upside down either, if the ring gap isn't aligned with the piston pin, it won't compress.
I saw that exact thing on a stihl 440 in a small engine repair class I took- the guy aligned the top ring, but not the bottom ring. Using a ring compressor, kept on squeezing (muscle man) until the bottom ring snapped...

Well, new ring isn't too much money... Consider a lesson learned?
When you get the new ring, look carefully at the alignment pin on the piston, and how the ends of the ring look- it will be pretty straightforward how it has to go on.

Started putting the saw back together. Had too many other things going on to get finished with it. Having a devil of a time getting the carb back in place. I'll tackle it again next time I get back home.

Lee, I would talk to the lad that cooked it, maybe he could work off  the cost to rebuild. The jug and piston kits Baileys sells are decent and make a rebuild worth wile. Frank C.
