It looks like I may have to replace the hydraulic pump in my 97 540G skidder. Does anyone know of a re-build or after market vendor for that pump or am I better off to pay the $3,000.00+ for a new one from John Deere?

try complete hydraulics . may be they can help

I think I saw them in the new surplus center book.

Delich sales has new pumps. Ive dealt with john before, give them a call.

Jdeere, try these guys.  http://kin-tecindustries.com/  I bought a replacement pump for my 540 a couple of years ago from them, and it has worked well.  About 40% cheaper than most, and they were good to work with.  Worth a phone call at least.

Take your pump to any hydraulic repair shop and see if they can rebuild it.

Thanks for the responses. I have a line on a shop here in Maine that probably can re-build my pump.

Those oil gear pumps are hard to build because of design. The valve plate is part of the end housing and it is often damaged. The also have compensator issues.  Depending on the type of failure,  cleaning the hydraulic system may be in order.  What the symptoms?

JDeere

Kiko,  Thanks again for your help. The blade barely moves and only when you throttle it up. Also, the steering is very sluggish. We got some gauges on it today and the diagnosis was the pump is gone.

With steering and blade slow it likely is the pump, however it may be in the compensator rather than the rotating part of the pump. Pressure should be around three grand with out working any function and you will see the pressure drop as a Cly is in motion and then destroked back to three when function is bottomed out.  Did you attemp to adjust the pressure?

JDeere

Kiko,  I don't know if the mechanic attempted to adjust the pressure. I don't think so, but can't be sure. My mechanic was a long time John Deere industrial dealership mechanic and his advice was to buy a new John Deere pump because he has not seen good long term results with a re-build. From the numbers I have received, a re-built is about $2,000.00 and a new pump is around $3,100.00.

I agree with OE pump choice.  Just be sure to find the cause of failure. Sometimes these pumps just wear out and sometimes the pump was damaged by contaminates of one kind or another.  I believe on those model there was a screen in the hydraulic tank where the suction hose hooks up that would come loose and go through the pump and get stuck in the priority valve as well. I am not trying to harp on this just trying to help you buy just one pump. Make sure there is not metal contamination in the system!

My JD 440 pump has a manual bypass valve that you can use in cold weather to make it easier to start. It is on the pump and looks almost like a radiator petcock. If yours has one and was turned in you wouldn't have much hydraulic pressure.

I had an old 690b with a denharco on it I had to replace the hydrolic pump. John deer wanted 3,000$ there is a place in Lewiston called clear water hydrolic that will sell the almost the same pumps as u can get from John deer for a third of the price. Only difference John deer uses bushings and clear water uses bearings which is not that big of a deal long as u have new filters and semi clean hydrolic fluid!

Thanks again for the responses. Kiko, there is a screen in the top of the hydraulic tank that was the first thing the mechanic told me to check. His experience was that it would fall apart and block (or worse) get sucked into the hydraulic pump. Mine was fine, so at this point we don't know what caused the failure.

There are now many good hydraulic shops that do a good job of rebuilding hydraulic pumps although it's not economical for smaller pumps.

But one very important caution. After a pump failure, don't rely on just cleaning screens and changing filters. You have to physically clean the residues out of the hydraulic reservoir. Many times that takes more than just draining and flushing. Make sure you inspect every corner of that tank or it will come back and bite you and your new pump.
