There's a local logger here that ran an identical setup for years. Easy to tell when it was him coming up the hill.  ;D No doubt it wasn't a cummins or cat...

I suspect you will find that truck will carry its load of logs and the old ford at the same time :D You cannot beat air brakes for loads that size, and I love hearing those 6-71's run :)

i like it. Now all it needs is 2 big chrome straight pipe stacks thatll make it roar  8)

Birchwood Logging

If I can haul 2500 feet on it I will be happy as far as power it will have about the same as the old ford that has a reman 3208 punched out 30 over with 3 ring pistons and the injection pump cranked up its probably pushing 220 to 240 horse the Detroit is pushing around 238 it will be nice to have a few extra gears and another axel as for brakes both trucks have air brakes the GMC should stop a little better. Now all I need is a driver for the GMC

i say its fun to drive with a 10 speed. Only thing ive ever drove is 5 and 2 speed rear

Birchwood Logging

Its totaly different than the 5 plus 2 I'm use to you only use the clutch to take off and stop you shift the gears with out clutching that's hard for me to get use to lol especially  bringing the rpms up to down shift

I had an IH set up just like that, 2500 ft an easy load.....it will run like its empty. 10 speed .....when you get used to it you won't want to get in a 5+2 no more. remember, turn yer Detroit up....they like to turn and will shift better that way. you are on the right track here.
oh, if that 238 is tuned right it will take the lunch money from a 3208 lol.

chevytaHOE5674

I would suggest some ear plugs. My father in law ran a screaming straight piped detroit powered logging truck for years right out of highschool, now he can't hear a thing.

:D Those kerosene burners need to be run on the pin to make them work. Don't try to lug them. I rode shotgun on a bull nose Kenworth with one of those equipped with a straight pipe behind the cab. Conversation stopped when the jake kicked in.

it will take a while to get used to it. try this when down shifting going down hill  or coming to a stop. rpm around 1500 with your left foot step on the brake not real hard while doing this apply a little fuel. this unloads the trans for just a sec so you can get it out of gear. blip the throttle you will need 1900rpm or so. you will get it. with a rt910 trans preselect  the range box. in 5th gear pull the button then shift to 6. downshifting going up hill just blip it an give her another gear. up shifting just let off it an slide it in. keep that motor wound up never lug to 1500 or lower. it it only turns 2100 under load turn it up to 2300

treeslayer2003

we had a 72' KW 900, 8v 71 dual exuast 13 speed......it would turn 2500, talk about loud lol, I could hear the old man comin back 5 miles away lol.
