Alright don't laugh !  My teeth need to be replaced ! :'(
I have diabetes, and one year ago I developed heart disease complete with a new pacemaker.
Now with all this I noticed late last summer some of my teeth were getting loose.
I made me a appointment with my dentist. After his examination he advised me to go to a specialist.
He told me that this heart disease, along with diabetes , is targeting my gums causing my teeth to get loose. (Gum disease)
Well , my question is does any one here have store bought choppers?
If so , what do you suggest ?
I just want to know some idea of what to expect.
Should I get plates ?
Should I get implants ?
Should I get plates on top and implants on bottom?
I was told so many options that my head could not take it all in. .
I am starting to have some trouble chewing some so I guess the time has come.
I have a appointment next Tuesday to have a mold of my mouth made, and will start pulling teeth soon.

It isn't a big deal as some think it is .The China clippers aren't as good as the set you were born with but they beat no teeth at all .

If you wimp out and don't wear them though they'll never fit and you will be toothless .A good dentist can make a set that look just like your regular teeth .A lousey dentist they'll look like false teeth .

thecfarm

A couple guys at work had thier teeth all removed and the false ones put just about right in. Took them only a few weeks and you would never know. One guy was a little over 40 and the other one a little over 50.
Sorry to hear of your troubles.

I haven't lost all of mine yet, but if-and-when I do, I would have the metal studs inserted and they would hold the denture in place so they wouldn't shift around!

The denture would have a hole in the gumline that the metal stud would fit right into!

They don't move around if they fit right .

I only had about seven left on the bottom so I asked the lady dentist if with the falsies I could whistle .She replied why yes .My replay was good because I never did before .-- no I can't whistle worth a hoot yet -- I can hum pretty good though .

Quite honestly, my store bought teeth are so much better than the ones I was born with it is no comparison.  My dad had bad teeth and I got his genes in that department.  Fell into the trap of trying to save them (dentist probably paid for a boat from me).  Went in, had the top pulled first, plate put right in.  Went home and ate a hamburger!  That fall went in and had the bottoms pulled and the plate put in.  After 8 months of wearing those teeth, went in for a final fitting and my good teeth.  Been over 15 years and wish I had done it 15 years earlier.  I feel better, they look better and I attribute them to helping with my weight gain!

Thanks for the replies.
I have been reading everyone, please keep them coming.
Those with store teeth of course! LOL !!!
I never been through nothing like this before so I am nerves as Tuesday gets closer.
Farmerjw, I like what I hear on the results you have with your choppers.
May I ask where you had it done?

Al_Smith

I'm telling you it isn't that bad .I only had about 7 on top and 7 on the bottom .A coupled jabs of novacaine you don't feel a thing .

I was counting when they jerked the tops .The poor young dental assistant in training nearly fainted .I held her hand to calm her down  ,the dentist about rolled on floor laughing. :D

They gave me pain pills ,I didn't take a one of them .The bottoms were a couple years later .Again not a big deal .

For that matter after a while your gums get toughened up .although I seldom go toothless I can gum up a T-bone steak if I choose to .I just talk funny .

WH_Conley

They took all of my out and my dentist said he would like to let the gums shrink in first. Better fit, longer before reline. He told me that when I could to chew gum or something along those lines to toughen gums and to get all the shrinking done. I went home and made jerky. Left the first batch soft, made each batch progressively tougher. He was impressed. Keep in mind this was in the old days. There were no studs around then. I know nothing except the old way.

Alright, time for a update.
I went to the special dentist today, they made three molds of my upper, and one of my lowers.
I go back  this Friday to make a casting to be sent off to have my dentures made.  Making teeth (dentures) take three weeks.
I will be going back at the end of this three week period, they will pull all my uppers and fit in my new store manufactured choppers. (uppers only) for now.
I feel like doing it this way I will have a resting period from the dentist and give my pocket time to recover along with my mouth. LOL ...
Thanks for the replies and the support .

i like mine.  both sets are plastic.  i have dropped them in the sink a couple times but since they are all plastic they do not break.  I keep the spare set in water in a jelly jar in the hall closet (because a spare set of teeth seems like a good thing to have).

from what i have been told about the implants from a co-worker, they only last a few years and then must be reset or removed all together.  which makes sense since loosing your teeth means bone loss in the jaws.  no teeth, less of a need for bone

your uppers will stay put fairly well once you get used to them...say about a months time and you wont notice they are there.  however your lowers will most likely be annoying.  they only think that holds lowers in place is gravity and adhesive you may use.  your tongue will push them up if not glued down.  its something i never got used to so i make sure to keep my lowers in place with fixodent with food seal. (it has the smallest nozzle i have found)

i have full dentures top and bottom.  i have had them for probably about 5 years now and am still happy with them.  on weekends, unless i have someplace to go, i dont bother with putting my teeth in.  over the past few years ive learned to eat almost anything without them, including doritos and cheese-its. (the learning curve sucks for both of those btw)

Sorry I didn't reply earlier.  Dealing with two barns and frozen water for cattle and horses.  Getting ready for another bypass surgery.  So here goes, all good and bad.   My teeth just didn't hold up, were bad.  But the darn things had roots that were cemented to the jawbone so they had to be real careful they didn't pull/chip/break to much bone off when pulling the teeth.  I had never had laughing gas before but had it for those two trips and greatly recommend it.  Talked with the dentist the whole way through.  I actually had an older dentist and he pulled mine in his office on morning visits.  Once the teeth were gone he cut my gums, peeled them back, ground the jawbone and sewed me up, put in my dentures and sent me home.  Two days had to go back, they took the teeth out, cleaned them and checked me and from then on I did it at home (rinsing with salt water :o).  Never had a bone chip or sliver ever from him work through.  He has since retired and my dad says I'll never have as good a set as I have now.  I hope not, but he has been right before!
I tell you, my teeth hurt all the time.  I would split wood with an axe and from breathing in cold air and the concussion from the axe, I would hurt.  Now with meth, if that were then, people would have thought me a meth head.  I had cavities along the gum line of my bottom teeth from chewing skoal for years.  The deal breaker was I always thought my front two teeth were my best two.  Had a dentist tell me they were going bad and not eat an apple.  I thought he was full of beans.  Went to the dentist I eventually had pull my teeth and he confirmed it.  Those are the two I had root canals on and all kinds of expensive stuff.  To tell you how proud I am of them, I used to smoke a swisher sweet after a hard day of baling hay, shoeing horses, stuff like that.  Have never smoked anything since getting them, don't want to stain them!!   People don't even know they are false (which doesn't matter to me).  It'll take you time, my dad told me to put 'em in and keep 'em in all day every day.  Efferdent and a plastic glass at night.  Your jaws will be tired and sore until your mouth gets used to closing farther as the teeth aren't there!  I can eat cashew nuts without my teeth in.  Good luck, you'll be fine.  Those dang molds with that gooey crap are the worst procedure in my book and you have that done!  I'll keep an eye out for this thread when I get home from the hospital.

A quick story....
So last weekend, I took my 83 year young mother with me to Alabama from Louisiana to visit my daughter and new grandson. We're sitting at her house after arriving, and suddenly my mother sits up and says, "I left my bridge on the seat in a napkin at McDonalds." Uh, oh...I got on the internet and found the number of the location we stopped at  about 45 minutes back towards Louisiana. I called and talked to the manager, and he sounded sympathetic to our plight. I jumped in the car and made the drive quickly, went inside, and asked the guy about them. They of course, had not seen them, and I KNEW they were in the dumpster. I asked who took out the garbage, and one fellow spoke up. He went out back to the dumpsters to point out the bags he had taken out. HERE WE GO...I thought. I dumped the bags out...milk shakes, fries, sammiches...everything. I felt EVERY napkin I could find, and double checked every wrapper. After the 3 bags he pointed to were gone through with nothing found, I gathered the next 3 under the original ones. I dumped them out, and then began to look at receipts and time stamps. The last bag I checked seemed to be in the neighborhood of the time we were there. The LAST napkin, I felt something. It was my mom's teeth! It was a gross job, but it saved $2000.00 and a lot of effort! My mother was thrilled. Lesson learned: Don't wrap up your teeth and set them to the side. Put them in your pocket or purse.  :D

Thanks , I really appreciate each and every reply on this subject. Reading the replies on what each of you have to say,  really helps.
Farmerjw, Good luck on your surgery, hope everything goes well for you.

Another up update.
Yesterday morning all my uppers were pulled .
That wont too bad as some had said.  I could not help to be nerves though.
After all the teeth were out he cleaned the bone thin stitched thinks back up.
My new dentures were shoved into my mouth along with a little pad on top with medicine on them to assist with healing.
I go back next Tuesday for a follow up.
Oh boy !  I started to feel the pain just a little before I could get the pain pills filled but, it did not take long for them to take affect.
When it was time for supper I enjoyed some scrambled eggs. Did feel strange to eat.
This morning I don't feel too bad at all.
I remember what wildbill said about a "learning curve" getting use to these things .
Let the adventure begin.

Buddy, way to go!  8)   Yep, those uppers are easy.  The bottoms are harder to get used to but worth it.  While it is cold out (at least here in Indiana) follow dr's advice, don't want to get a dry socket from sucking in cold air.  Take it easy, you have had a bit of trauma to heal from.  Sounds like your dentist and mine were from the same school, take the time to do it right.  Good healing!!!!!!!!

Been 2 months ago today that I had ALL my upper teeth removed and a plate installed.
Finley I can eat with out any pain but, I do have some trouble with the darn thing moving around some and that is because I still have to use superglue to hold the things it. My doctor wants to wait till my gums have shrunk hopefully completely before I go back next week for the final fitting.
I am told after that I should not need ANY KIND of glue to hold it in place, we will see...
I remember what one of you said ,"The learning curve sucks".
I will have to agree with that 100%.
I will report back later after I have my final fitting.
Thanks again for the replies...

Farmerjw

My first set were temporaries.  So I was not worried about messing with them.  Ground on them with a dremel tool whenever I had a sore spot arise.  Now a little goes a long way so don't pour the coals to them and grind a bunch at a time.
