Tantoy  How is this project doing?
Thanks for asking, I have been quite sick the last month, haven't even been able to work much. Hoping to be getting better soon and getting back to it. Not used to being sick for more than a day or two at my age! I will resume progress pictures when I get back to work.

I also was sick for 4+ weeks. No fun at all.  after 3 weeks the Dr. gave me some meds , the side effects were as bad as being sick. I stuck it out for 9 days feel great now.
I like what you are doing with that old Garrett. :)

OK, made some progress this weekend. Did some more washing and tore down the engine. What I found wasn't a great surprise as I new water had been leaking in the exhaust.  Drained the engine oil first and about a gallon of water came out before the oil. Removed head and 2 holes had water in them and the third piston was down exposing the intake ports. Next I removed the pan and connecting rod caps, the bearings looked fairly fresh. The pistons are stuck in the liners, so I cant use a liner puller to remove the liners. At this point my next move it to check the condition of the extra engine that came with the skidder.

Tantoy, that looks like a job for some bluecreeper!  I bet if you soaked a bit of bluecreeper in those cylinders, you would be able to knock the pistons out, since you have the crank and conn rod caps off, straight out the bottom.  That stuff is amazing!

In two days from now, tomorrow will be yesterday.

ATF type F although mercon/dex works about the same.  About 10 times better than any commercial penetrating oil.

Let it sit in there for about 4 hours than give em a light tap or try to turn it over with a wrench, wiggle the crank back and forth a bit, just be careful with the piston rings.

If that don't work heat em up with a torch and pound them through, at least then you can replace the sleeves.
well that didn't work

I used Kano before I discovered Blue Creeper (Rust Reaper formerly) and found the BC much better.

And the smell of it much much better...  :)

Pull the crank, fill cylinders with  penetrating oil, let sit for a day then take a hardwood stick like a big hammer handle and drive the pistons out. You are going to resleve and put in new pistons anyway I would think. Ed

The best penetrating oil I've ever used is Wintergreen oil from the drugstore, a little goes a long ways, I've freed up things that where rusted for years, it's my understanding it's the only penetrating oil used by the US Navy on submarines, Trt it guys.

Well I filled the cylinders with a mixture of ATF and acetone. I am pretty sure the pistons/sleeves are no good, but I have time on my side so I will see what happens next weekend. Here is a picture of the spare engine just to keep you picture happy people satisfied! Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Also a picture of a 3-53 Gama goat engine that runs but I don't want to put it in the skidder.

Gamma goats, now that's one crazy machine for you! Over in Jaypee Idaho, the fire camp there still has several operational 'goats, and they still run them.

Very cool thread. You can really see that it is the same frame as the c4 or pretty darn close. What axles? They look different or is it a different planetary only?

Ah never mind. Now that I look again they look like the same as that on my c4.

Chester,
Do you believe they are Rockwell axles? Just curious, I am not sure? Model? I know they are planetary.
Have made small progress in painting some parts.  Yellow is not easy to paint, lots of coats. I will post some pictures tomorrow.  Also have a lead on a 3-53 runner engine for cheaper than I can rebuild. Please remember guys, this in a hobby skidder, I cant justify a respectable rebuild on the engine even if my take out only needs sleeves and pistons.

Sorry tantoy I missed your questions.  I agree with my fellow Mainer. Most likely Rockwell pr52.

You are doing a great job my friend.  Keep it up. The old girl is lucky u found her. Send some more pics. :-)

Small progress. Rodda paint (I think its a northwest brand only) old cat yellow. It is a lacquer   base. Takes at least 2 coats to cover. I have used their black paint for my trailers and flatbeds ect with good results at a cheap price but yellow is just a pain in the #@&.

Yep gray primer. The lady at the paint store said if I was to have the paint tinted when they make the paint it would cover much better, vs having the retail store take a base and add color to it. The problem was none of the warehouses had any old cat yellow and I didn't feel like waiting. I can tell the color if off a little , but its not going to any shows so who cares :D

More slow progress. Got the engine freed up. Used the new wd40 product penetrating lubricant. One of the three holes had pitted liners. I am going to just get a new liner and rings and re use old piston. Like I said in the beginning the engine had been rebuilt not too long ago and was allowed to freeze break so most every thing looks good. Please remember this is just a hobby project too so I am not relying on it to make any $ (probably just cost me $). Also I pressure tested the radiator and it had no leaks!
