Arbor-Mill

Hey guys,

New to the forum here and I figured I would introduce myself and I could also could use some help with a couple of questions I have.  I am a working arborist in NC and also a sawmiller.  I started sawmilling to cut down on wasting the trees we removed and provide lumber to folks here local to my area.  Not a huge operation but it keeps me busy.  Anyhow, I was curious if any of you urban guys have any experience with the over-the road- towable log trailers and grapple loaders like the ones available at Baileys?  I have not found very many companies that make that type of equipment and was curious if ya'll know of any other companies that make such equipment available in the U.S..  I am trying to cut down on trips I have to make from my customers yards to my woodyard.  I currently have to load my trailer with my skid steer, haul the logs home, and return for my skid steer.  Any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the Forum.  Sorry I can't help you any on the specific trailer question.  I've seen the ones advertised at Baileys, and that is the extent of my knowledge.  I have seen pictures of a few, (might want to check out the thread, "Show us your wood hauling rig" or something close to that).  Seems to me there were several shown there, and you could try PMing those members.

I too am an arborist.  I love mine.  I forward logs roadside with a mini loader, then pick them up with this.

Here it is hauling a shed, a bit unconventional but there are more pics in my gallery.

I think eventually i will upgrade the boom.  Baileys is no help at all with parts, either is the manufacturer.

It wont lift that log out straight, but no problems off the side.  I can get a big log on there, one end at a time if needed.

15000 gvw, weighs between 4 and 5 empty, not sure exacts.

I am currently looking at a dump trailer with a grapple made by Centreville manufacturing. Here we can put a chipper behind the trailer if we want.

Arbor-Mill

Brendon that's what I was looking for.  I did notice you had some larger logs on that trailer.  I was hoping to get something that could handle some larger diameter logs as well as longer stuff.  I see in the picture your boom says Farma. I'm guessing that's the manufacturer.  I am well east of black mountain, probably about 3 hrs worth.  My brother lives near black mountain. I appreciate the photos as I enjoy looking at other tree service set-ups.  Where about did you get such a rig?  I thought about getting the trailer built by some guys locally but no-one around here has the little boom grapples.  Thanks for the input.

Tom King

I'm about an hour and a half from you.  Someone here around the lake has had one for years with a grapple boom on it.  I haven't paid much attention to it, but I believe the trailer is a dual tandem gooseneck, so it may be heavier than you need anyway.  Once this snow melts, I can drive by there and get some more information if it will do you any good.

brendonv

Its a baileys trailer, found it used.  Now they call the boom jms, same thing though.  Like i said either they, or trying to get an answer from the manufacturer is like pulling teeth.  Im not sure if its a language barrier with the manufacturer, or what but you can email them, not get a response for over a week, then they never answered the question in the first place.

Just build a trailer and add the boom, nokka, farmi, are a couple bigger names.

Thanks Guys.  I appreciate all the help! I guess I'm looking at yet another day of cruising the internet for neat equipment that I want while this snow melts.

I have a Woodmizer lt35 HD.  Its not a big mill but I can scratch out a couple thousand feet in a good day!  Hopefully in the next 5-7 years I can upgrade to one of the big-boys!  I have thoroughly enjoyed it for the last year and s half.

Hello Arbor-Mill; welcome to the Forum!  I'm a little ways south of you on the south side of Raleigh.

Some of the major brands of forwarding trailers are Metavic, Farmi, Blue Ox and Farmi.  They have models designed for both street as well as forest use.

Thanks scsmith,

I think I have talked to you before on the NC woodworker forum.  Piedmont Sawmill is my name on that forum.  Thanks for the names of those companies!  Hope all is well your way.

The biggest problem I found was their limited payload and financial payback.  I would not recommend them in place of real logging rigs but they work good for tree service work, specific sawlog pickups/deliveries, or for general duties around the sawmill / landing where tight spaces exist.  I bought an older Metavic loader and then put it on a custom designed trailer.   The  trailer is rated at 25,800 GVWR with a payload of a little over 20K which is ideal for my needs.

Welcome to the forum and good luck to you.

Ahlkey.

Is the metavic a 3 point hitch type mounting?

I wish i could have gone gooseneck, but one truck plays many roles for me.

Arbor-Mill

ahlkey,

Thats a nice trailer.  Im glad your posted that.  I have two 35' I beams and had the thought of having one built sort of like that.  All the over the road trailers seem to be a tad smaller than I feel they should be for the loads they are hauling.  It would be perfect for Urban Salvage, Tree Work, and occassionallly buying the 1,000-1,500 bd. ft. loads I pick up from local loggers.  I do not have the equipment to unload a 40' log trailer with 12' standards which is commonly used in our area nor do I generally need a 5,000 bd. ft. full load from a log truck at one time unless I am sawing a custom order.  I think it would be a great way to save gas and time in Tree Removal getting logs out of peoples yards and stacked at the mill.  Thanks for the pic!

ahlkey

The Metavic is a truck mount which make it a bit more stout.  It is mounted to a 3/4 inch steel plate directly to the I-Beams.  The only big consideration of course is a larger trailer means you need a larger truck to pull it.  The truck in the picture is a RAM 4500 with a 4.88 ratio to handle the load.

brendonv

So there is a plate welded to the trailer, than i asume the base of the loader is either bolted or welded to that?

Just gathering info if i plan to upgrade loaders.  Any issues getting parts?
