Look for a tree farmer   C4 or a timberjack  205 or 208. All of wich are smaller skidders and are simple to get parts for and work on when things break .

The jacks are good skidder as well as the tree farmer. You clould also look into a 440 deere the 440a only weighs around 11,000 lbs.

Deere's aren't bad but some parts can be very expensive when things go wrong.

Mountain Logger, and Garrett both made small-ish skidders.  Garrett model 10 or model 15.  There is a Canadian co that makes, or made (not sure if they are still in production) a small skidder, kind of spendy called the Awassos( I think it is Canadian indian for black bear). BTW welcome to the Forestry Forum cherish!!

thanks to everyone for input very informative. To answer why the smaller skidder. several reasons. transportation cost cost of repairs cost of tires. and most of my jobs are smaller jobs. i already own a 2012 cat 259 b3 skid loader just dont skid logs that great

I agree with logman on the c4 or 205/208 even a 225 wouldn't be bad mine weighs around 14000 other brands aren't bad just with tree farmer or timberjacks  the parts are relatively easy to come by and there more reasonably priced than some others

I own a 440a, list weight at 12000, the newer version 440d weighed in at around 14000.  I've been very happy with it, parts are expensive and you pretty much have to go to deere to get anything major, but so far no major break downs... filters and the usual maintenance stuff you can get at Napa.

The garrets where right around 8-9k pounds for the 10 or 15, They made a 16 that weighed a little more but had more ponies and heavier axles and winch, but could still be towed on a goose neck behind a 1 ton truck.

Tires are still spendy no matter that they are smaller you could put some farmer tires on but they won't last long in logging conditions, tires for my deere start around 1400 a piece and go up from there, tires for the old garrets are pretty much gone except for the farmer ag rated tires, they work but you have to be careful with them.

Timber jack is also a very fine machine,  I really like the old low slung offset ones, guy could just hop right into the cab and go, instead of climbing an awkward ladder looking thing that your foot doesn't exactly fit into...
well that didn't work

You can flop a 440A on flat ground.. uugghh.  I have a 440D and with 18.4 tires you still want to watch out, you see air under the tires quite frequently. A 405 franklin is about the nicest of any of the "small" skidders. Guy down the road has a 508 cat, im not to impressed.
