After pondering the acquisition of a hydraulic mill for the past few weeks, I have decided to do the full factory hydraulic upgrade to my 2009 LT40. When I purchased the mill new, I added the optional log loader to assist the operation. However, since that time, the size of my logs increased from around 12" diameter to now in the 18 - 26" diameter range. Hydraulics, as well as the auto clutch, are being added to reduce the wear and tear on my body and to speed up the operation a little bit. I ordered the 3/8th hydraulic hoses where necessary, to allow for the addition of a second pump should I want to boost the speed. I guess if I do that it will become an LT40BETTERHDG28. :)

Thanks to the members whom I messaged that shared their experiences with me.

I will be sure to post pics once the parts arrive and the upgrade begins.

I hope to be doing the same upgrade shortly.  I managed to break the mill free from the ground and tow it out of its home.  The garage needs to be cleaned out to make some space.   :D

Certainly post the pictures!  It will be an interesting upgrade.  Did you get the parts for the bolt on claw turner as well?

DGK

Woodenhead,

Yes, I got the claw turner kit, roller toe board kit and the two plane clamp parts. A local machine shop will do the frame modifications for the clamp. I already had the log loader. Woodmizer is supplying everything including the Hydraulic Box, valves, hoses, etc. I am also adding the auto clutch and 2 fine adjust outriggers for the front and back of the mill. It is not cheap to do, but it will bring me to about the same price of a HD had I bought it instead of the manual back in 2009.

I looked at doing the same thing, but my mill is a 95, most of the parts won't fit without extensive modifications, hence the pineywoods hydraulic mod...

Pineywoods,

If I had half your skill, I would have considered your mods. Unfortunately, I do not work with metal. Now, if I could build it out of wood, that would be a different story.

So the parts for the upgrade finally arrived last Tuesday. I am proud to say that I now have a fully hydraulic LT40 G28 with the auto clutch. In total, it took about 5 days of working on the mill to do the change over. I started to take pics at the beginning of the teardown but then found it was slowing me down. If anyone else is considering doing the same, I am most willing to answer any questions that you may have. Thanks to Gary at Wood-Miizer Salmon Arm for putting together such a complete package of parts.

Way to go!   :)  I'm certainly enjoying the upgrade and I know you will too.

I ran the mill today and sawed about 500 ft in the afternoon of large Sitka Spruce 24"-16'. WOW, all I can say is that I wish that I had the hydraulics and the auto-clutch sooner.

It won't take but a couple of days for you to stop waving your clutch arm.   ;D

Don't forget to add a Heavy Duty Deep Cycle battery 875 CA or higher. Original battery not strong enough for the hydraulics
