I did the same thing for my hackberry floors.  In a residential setting without big dogs you can get away with using something other than white oak.  Mine have been holding up well for about 3 years now.  Every time I get self-concsious about a dent or scratch I pay attention to other people's hardwood and take comfort in defects being the "nature of the beast."  That's a great looking floor and a nice write-up.  - Ryan

That is nice looking flooring. I know a guy that maybe able to get us some sweet-gum. Hint. If you make it out tomorrow, I've got to replace a carriage bearing that want take long. Old one is already out but the new one is at the post office.

Sweetgum works pretty well in applications where each board is free to move on its own, like paneling or a floor.  Glue it up in a wide panel and Whoa Nellie  :D.

I would think that if you sawed and dried the lumber, then built a big fire and burned all the twisted and warped boards, the remaining ones would work pretty well.  If quartersawn, the final yield would go way up.  Generally, the first couple of boards off each flat sawn face of a cant are the worst when it comes to major twist and warp.

I have found that there is no solution to the boards that are twisted or warped.  You would think that you could flatten it out on the jointer and then plane it flat.  Well, that is fine..........for a while.  Then, the board will tend to return to its old shape if there is any change in equilibrium moisture content.

That sure is a beautiful floor and the owners have a right to be very proud.

MagicMan if you a few hundred miles closer :D Don't know yet may just cut ties out of mine still yet. Good lookin floor none the less. Gum moves a lot, qsawing may be the only way to make it work good ???
