My father-in-law gave me some old
lifting logging tongs. My question to
all of you folks who hang out in antique
shops is this.  Are they more valuable
if I leave them as is or do I clean them
up and paint them?  I have used and am going
to continue to use them.

David_c

if your going to use them why not clean them up and paint if you want.

whitepe

Thanks...
Jeff what do you have to say to an old core?
You have been known to hang out at antique shops.   ;)

Jeff

Give them to me and buy some new ones to use. ;D

Dont paint em! Dont clean or sand em! order some rust reaper and use it on the joint. Or better yet...

Give them to me and buy some new ones to use. ;D

Sure is nice of Jeff to be so willing to take those rusty old tongs off your hands. Hmmmmmmm!

I'm told that the value is in their condition class, poor, fair, good, excellent, without any restoration or painting.

Whitepe what it looks like from da picture is that you have a set of skidding tongs. Seeing as how Jeff ain't got no tractor, and I do, maybe ya might be better off sendin' dem things to me.  ;)

Give em to you Michiganders? U gotta be crazy.
Shucks.. the last time I dropped something
off at your house Jeff you put it out for the trash pickup. :D
Noble still hasn't forgiven you for that  >:(

Chet... what's the difference between skidding
and lifting tongs?  When I put these tongs fully closed,
the ends point up at about 45 degrees.
I can say that they sure are heavy (about 30-35 pounds) and
the bolt in the middle is about 1 inch in diameter.

Dewwood,
Those tongs used to be in your neck of the woods
as my father-in-law lives just south of Fort Wayne
in Wells Co.  Now they are way over here
in good old ILLY NOISE.

Ron,
Your advice is better than those other two guys in Michigan
;D  You should swing by Jeff's once in a while.
There's some nice things in his trash.  :D

Whitepe,
Those might very well be lifting tongs. Looking at the picture they more resemble skidding tongs by the shape of their arms.

Chet...
Actually they are neither lifting tongs nor skidding tongs.
They are MY tongs.   ;D

Frank_Pender

Whitpe, I believe that they (tongs) need to be here on the West Coast with a set I have hangling in my collection.  That way they would not feel alone. ;D

Got a set of tongs similar to those around here someplace (if I didn't toss them away in my heave-ho cleaning frenzy), the old folks here used to lift bailed hey or straw up into the hey loft, using a pully system. Then came along the motorized conveyor, now we're modern. ;D Or they used them to twitch ice blocks outta the river for their ice houses, till we gots Frigidaires and GE's in the 50's. :D  You wouldn't be hold'n them tongs very long with heavy green wood, they'd cut into your hands (mine had handles). What ya'de use is a set of two-man log tongs from LogRite with a nice handle to hold onto that didn't cut into your hands. ;) ;D :D

I don't have a problem with old tools one bit. I just have a "thing" for wanting them to be blue.

If I were you I'd send them to Jeff and see if he can have them powder coated blue. He'll send them right back when they're done. Right Jeff?

Frank_Pender

I just picked up another set of the short handle version of ice tongs a few days ago for a couple bucks.  The other set is like in the picture where you use two hands.  The more frcent is for one handed style.
Frank Pender

Jeff

You bet there LogRite, soon as I get them powder coated blue I'd send then right back!

We have a great powder coater here locally. He's been in business for 40 years. He can promise turn around time in less than 2 years. You might want to give him a try.

From the looks of things, I better be getting
some tong dogs to guard them. Tong dogs are
very similar to log dogs like Arky has.   ;D

When ever I go to the doctor, I have to open
my mouth and say ahhh while he sticks
a tong depressor inside.
