I've got an old Stihl 011AV chainsaw and while it
is stored,  all of the bar oil in the reservoir
leaks out.  It's nearly 20 years old and I don't
want to put much money in it (i.e. pay the dealer to do
the repairs).  I'm guessing that for just a few $$$
in parts It could be easily repaired. Does anybody have
any suggestions about what might be wrong with it?

Hello Whitepe
Well here just a guess and a little knowledge from my father! Sometimes an oiler on them old saw will leak out of the bar plate which is up against the bar itself by gravity pressure! Or you have a leak in the bar oil tank! Maybe clean it up and fill it with gas and take the bar off and inspect it good to try to see were the leak is! Kevin or one of thguys on this forum will have some good ideas to!

I looked once but not recently and couldn't find the leak.
That's why it got set on the shelf.   Now that I am
not running all over the place every night to my kid's
high school baseball games (season is over) I've got
some time to give it a look see again.   I have a newer
009 (about 3 years old) which I use now anyway and it
is essentially the same as the 011.  I am thinking of
selling / trading the 011 and getting an 025 or 026.
At my top end I have an 044 but I want something inbetween
the 009 and 044.

It's just a guess but check the pump for a crack in a gasket or maybe the cover is loose.
It should be taken apart cleaned and rebuilt now that you have all this free time. ;D
Follow the oil system from the oil tank back through the pump to see if you can locate the source of the leak.

The chimer.

Thanks Kevin...
I'll tear into it this weekend. The wife has plans for me
tomorrow evening. I fired the saw up tonight
as it hadn't been run in over a year. Started after about
4 or 5 pulls.  Right now I've got 025 or 026 fever
real bad.  I want something with a little more power
than the 009 with about the same weight with a 16 inch bar
on it which is the same bar as my 011.    The 044 is
a bit much weight and horsepower. I only fire it up
to cut 20 inch logs or bigger.

The 026 is a good saw I've got a friend who is a log builder and he has one! I played around with modified the muffler and open the airfilter cover a bit and then tuned it up! Man what a little screamer love that little saw! That was four years ago and he uses it alsmost everyday! Its still running good just got done rebuilding it about 2 months ago for him and that thing still running strong! Little bit of mods. done and it makes a dif. in them little saws! But of course just my opion!!! ;D

Preston,

Preston and Kevin.
Well,  I decided not to mess with the 011 any longer.
Frankly I hadn't used it in over three years when my wife
got me the 009 for Christmas in 2000.
The 011 also needed new anti vibration bushings,
a heat deflecting shield around the spark plug wire
a couple of other broken plastic parts and since it
was 17 years old I decided to trade it in for an MS 250.
The dealer gave me $25 for it and said they would sell it for $50.  I had a couple of newchains for the 011 sitting on the shelf that I boughtquite some time ago and they let me trade those two chains even up for two new chains to fit the
MS 250. They included one additional chain free
with the saw for four chains total.
My lineup now is as follows:
     009 with 14 inch bar (2 hp)
MS250 with 16 inch bar. (3 hp)
    029 with 20 inch bar   (3.75 hp)
    044 with 24 inch bar   (5.3 hp)

The 009 is a great saw for limbing but it
just doesn't have enough power for bucking firewood.
The 044 I use for felling trees and bucking logs
to length for the saw mill.
The 029 I use for firewood but at 13 pounds weight
for the power head plus 20 inch bar, it gets kinda heavy
after a while. I will now use the MS 250 for firewood and at
10.3 pounds it won't be as fatiguing as the 029.
I also really like the new toolless fuel and oil caps on the MS250.   The new caps will only fit the new saws. I wish
they would design some toolless caps to fit the old saws
as well.

So when is Cat going to start making chainsaws Perry?

whitepe

I think the margins on chain saws are a little thin when compared to a D11 or 797 truck  ;D

Speaking of chain saws. Does anyone know
how much the QCA cost for the MS250?
