What's the skinny on a stihl 048? Thumbs up or down? Is 200.00 a good price? Or should I hang back and wait for a more modern saw? Thanks!

If its in good running and physical condition.....than yes....buy it.
But parts for that saw are becoming harder to find than kryptonite. Crank seals especially.
I just sold a parts 048 for $50 not running

What is it with these 048s'cropping up all the sudden .Between 4 forums I've seen more discussion on these things in the last two weeks than I've seen the last three years .

I've seen three of these things in my lifetime and I own two of them .Now all the sudden they come from no where .Must be the phase of the moon or something .

The 048 introduced in 1980 was actually a larger version of the 042 which was introduced in 1977. A logger buddy of mine cut pulpwood with the 048 -18"b/c in the early '80s and from what I could see it was a very reliable saw.
But it didn't take him long to switch to the 038 Super which a lot of the guys including myself were using at the time.
Then came the 034, then the 034Super, then 1988-89 the 044
Oh I forgot I ran the 064-18" from 1986 till the 044 came out.
Making a living with a saw since age 16.
