I run all 2186/2188s and have been thinking about getting a smaller saw for back up or cutting smaller timber. I had a 2171 a few years ago for a couple week and someone decided they needed it more then me. My question is what are everyone's thoughts on these saw. I found a used 2165 for $300 thought about getting it to try. Or should I just put the money toward the new 2172. I almost always run 24" bars. Maybe just get another 2188. Almost all hardwood logs here to cut. Thanks

Your area must be similar to mine...I cut in CNY. All hardwood. No replacement for displacement. With a 24in bar I would skip the 2165. If you were running an 18 even a 20, that 2165 would be more than enough. I ran a 20inch on a Husqvarna 365 for a while..until I ran my bigger iron I was happy. Hard maple, ash, oak, beach is what I mostly cut here. Have a 18inch on a 2172 and a 20" to 24" on a few old "Hobby Project" Jred 920's that block the bigger wood. Have a Sugihara 28in bar on a Solo 603 100cc monster. My main felling saw is a Husqvarna 365/371 hybrid (371 top end on 365 plastic) that just works. Have a 20in Sugihara bar on it. Works well for most of what I do. My 365 now wears a 18in Sugihara when it works.

if your running the new saws the 2166 and 2172 share the same cylinder and piston , the 2166 has the transfer doors 3/4's of there opening blocked off so just grind that part blocking the port off and you have a 2172 and they will run a 24 inch bar but I would not go any bigger

No the one I'm looking at tonight is the older 2165. Found it for sale used but in great shape

ehp

yes I read that but was saying if you were buying a new saw the 2166 can be bought for less money than the 2172 and it does not take much time to grind the 2 doors to make it the 2172 , some places I have been told they want $200 more for the 2172 over the 2166

PaYoungBuck

Ok sorry I'm with you now. Yes at the least the 2166 is $100 less. I picked up the 2165 tonight it's a 08 but looks like new fired right up and cut great. It came with a 20inch bar and chain on it and also a like new 32 inch with a like new semi skip chain. It'll just be a back up saw but the 32 bar may come in Han on one of my bigger saws from time to time. No clue what the package is worth but I figured the big bar and chain was worth $100 by itself and the saw?? Maybe $300-350??? Anyone's thoughts?

You know, you can upgrade the 2165 and put a 2171(372xp) top end on it. Just a thought for future reference   :P
Baileys has a 20" oregon powermatch B+C combo for $78, and a powermatch 32" B+C combo for $110, but has other 32" bars, no chain, for $150+ (All to fit your Jonsered).

And I have ran some 2165's that ran very close to the 372's , the closed port cylinder ran better than the open port cylinder , I would run the saw and see how it cuts , it might be all you need

So, are the 2166 and 2172 the same displacement now?
