I for one do not subscribe to the theory that parts lists and service manuals are prioritary information which should be non available to the general public .Now perhaps certain franchhise owners may feel they are the chosen few and are entitled to withhold that information  .

They fail to realize in this day of the "information age "that would be next to impossible .For that matter I find it hard to believe any company would be foolish enough to engage in a criminal activity such as hacking a dang web forum .The repercussion from that would be far reaching .

How about let's see some proof rather than speculation about this bold statement of a multi national company hacking a web forum .

Just another thought:

Remember Sony XP? They were looking to stop pirating of their music and video files from DVD and CD's. So Sony embedded some code in their stuff so that if a user hijacked the files, the XP code went with it and that allowed Sony full access to the pirate's system as well as easy proof of where the files come from.

Now I don't remember the outcome of the legal battle between Sony and the general market, however, I'm sure there was one. My point is that I do believe that a OPE powerhouse with the engineering firepower to produce M-Tronic and Autotune saws, plus the technical prowess/managerial expertise required to manage websites and market a product worldwide, would also have the programming savvy to embed enough code in their digital files which are owned by them to access them anywhere on the net where the files are stored.

It don't matter how well you back up data or what kind of software you monitor your system with, if ya click the wrong thing, you are done.

I am not so worried about that, some 12 year old kid will always thow on a patch to solve that problem.

Any How, HolmenTree made a good point. Besides, he's one good looking son of a gun.

I'm interested to see how the AS saga spins out. For me, Forestry Forum is a much more user friendly site. My wife don't get concerned over here that every other thread is gonna have pictures of some half naked gals posted in a wet T-Shirt like on Arborist Site. Not that there's any thing wrong with it, but for you young dudes, remember, "Happy Wife, Happy Life."

Keep it about trees and machines and keep the moving parts clean.

Oh, hey, Jeff, did you bag a deer?
Jed: Jethro, how's come they ain't no ice in Kali Forni-a?

Jethro: Don't look at me Uncle Jed. I didn't take it.

Jeff

No deer yet. All nocturnal. Did get some blurry coyote and bear pictures though on the game camera with the night ime deer pics. Our predator population is larger than our deer population I think. I see grouse every evening. No matter. I get to sit in a tree and ponder. Good for the soul. :)

As far as retaining the intellectual property rights to a piece of equipment, vis a vis refusing to share a shop manual with someone who has bought said equipment from you:  I'm calling, "Foul!", loud and clear:  If I buy something from you, and you refuse to repair it for me, unless I pay up, if and when it stops working, due to no fault of my own, including normal wear and tear, I will darn-well try as hard as I can to find a manual that allows me to repair the equipment, by the numbers.  I've paid my money, enriching your bank account in the process, I now own the equipment, and if you are trying to keep a strangle hold on the repair of what I bought from you, by forcing me to come back to you so you can hit me up, again, money-wise, we're then at war, in a way.  I'll try as hard as I can to get that manual, any way I can, unless I've signed something that says I have no right to it, something I'd never do. As for liability issues, used to justify the withholding of shop manuals, again I call "Foul!"  If I mess around with a piece of equipment I've bought from you, using a manual you've given me, it's a pretty simple thing to have me sign a waiver of liability before you give/sell me the manual.  "Tinker at your own risk," in essence.  I see withholding shop manuals in one way only:  It's an attempt by companies to force you to use them for repairs, thus fattening their bottom line.

My point exactly .However in relationship to the topic I don't see that has any bearing related to the allegations of a  company fooling with a web forum .

An action like that would not be very wise in the business sense of things .If that ever were the case the public outrage would be akin to a 300 pound bully beating up on a 90 pound little boy .

Al_Smith

You know on that subject of so called intellectual material of the Ford automobiles I have owned I never ever had one problem of buying certain service manuals if I so desired directing from the company .I would almost bet that most if not all automotive companies offer the same technical reference services .Quite frankly though as far as good tech manuals on automotive Mitchels are the best but they come at a price .---I get my info at the public library --- ;)--tightwad ya know .

"My wife don't get concerned over here that every other thread is gonna have pictures of some half naked gals posted in a wet T-Shirt like on Arborist Site. "

I must be blind.  I never see that.  Some of the avitars are a bit racey but they are so small you can't see them.

They are still struggling.  I hope they get it resolved so the site can get back to normal.  I have received a lot of good advice and help on the AS forum.

I'm another AS refugee who is a sponsor (though at a low level). I can't get on this morning again. I get a blank screen that never loads. It has definitely hurt my contacts with buyers. I'm sure Daren has some crack techies working on the problem, but for this to have gone on over a month shows the seriousness of the hack. It sounds like it is a VB hole the hackers have found and I'm sure there are VB coders trying to find the fix.

sharkey

Crack coders, I doubt it.  Been dark over there all weekend.  AS Sponsors surely are feeling this at the worst possible time of the year.

One of the main reasons I switched from Arboristsite to Forestry Forum was to get away from the deluge of inane posts about everything that wasn't to do with timber, most of which should have been on Facebook or Twitter. Let's hope these punters are not desperate enough for their daily dose of gossip about what they had for breakfast  that they transfer to this site even if only temporarily.

Dark? ??? It is more like it is up and down with the fuctionality all the time - I have been able to both read and post quite a bit at the AS over the weekend, With or without JavaScript blocked out.  It is obvious that someone is working at it!

Not according to screen shots I saw from facebook .According to that it appears he's been fumbling along all my his lonesome .

Now not that it's any of my business how anyone runs a web site but I was under the impression that at one time he did have some crackerjack IT people .Evidently that has changed for whatever reason . ???

Another lost AS member here, where do I stack my saws? There was a wealth of information over there and I hope this is the same. I promise never to mention B---n, it wasn't my thing either, good to see familier names here.

:D It may come as a surprise to some but there are plenty of web forums with a lot of good information besides the subject in question .This praticular  one we are now socialising  one being one of same.

I once told the owner of the subject site that it's a vast and worldwide internet and nobody but nobody will ever have exclusive rights on any subject matter discussed on it .If he didn't acknowledge that fact then I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut he does now .That said I'm certain they'll get it back up and running sooner if not later . ;)
