I am on my way to becoming a certified arborist. I am a Groundsman for a tree service right now and am looking to advance in the tree/ forest career. Any advice for what could be next after becoming a Certified Arborist.

Are their other certified arborists already working for your company?  If so, your employer can add to his advertising resume' by adding you to his list.  If there are no others working for your company, your employer can capitalize on your certification in his advertising.

Since you are a groundsman, I gather that you don't have much experience yet.  I'd say continue to work for somebody else to get as much experience as you can in other aspects of tree care/maintenance/running a business. If you eventually want to have your own company, strike out on your own after a few more years of experience.  Certification will not only help you do your job better, but also in getting customers.

I think there may be education involved? Im not sure if anyone can take the test? If so you would need im sure several licened ones to sign off for you.

There are some education and /Or time in work requirements so be sure to check the ISA site to assure you can test.
Get the book and study it! - highlight points and study it again. It is not an easy test, and many of the questions seem to have two answers, so pick the one from the book.

There are continuing education units to recertify. you can keep up on line or through their magazine, state chapters, or going to your state or regional ISA conference

Your boss can use your qualifications in advertising, but must follow their guidelines or you can be penalized. they are very sensitive about false or misleading use of the credentials. It's good to have and use for promotion, but if they use it they should also help with your conference fees ( strictly my opinion)

You can also test for certified tree worker, municipal specialist, Utility specialist, and Board Certified Master Arborist. If you want to move your career towards other areas than private treework, they look very favorably on the certifications when hiring. I know my company does, and we expect our utility foresters to get it within a year of hire. it will help your career if you are staying in the industry,
