I along with 8 other Charlotte (NC) Woodworkers Association members retrieved a Crescent 36" band saw from a basement shop, up a 10 percent slope onto my log trailer and unloaded it at our club shop today.  That may not sound like much if you say it fast but this is real old arn and none of us there are spring chickens either. We started at 9:00 this morning and were all really dragging around 5:00 this afternoon.  Note that the house and shop was actually built around the saw.  I think the saw was donated to the Charlotte Woodworkers Association because the owner no longer could do wood working and no one else wanted to haul that saw up the slope.

First task was dis-assembly in order to minimize the weight of any piece.  The saw was put in place before the house was built and in good shape but like all old arn it did not take kindly to being taken apart.  The table alone is more than one ordinary man can lift.  We finally rented a larger gear puller to remove the lower wheel.

Dis-assembly can only go so far.  We finally got down to an 800 or so lb. piece of cast iron that is the saw's frame.  Fortunately I had brought 4 sheets of 3/4 plywood.  We laid the frame down one the plywood and attached the winch cable from my trailer.  The winch dragged the frame up the slope and onto my trailer.  All of he other pieces were hand carried up the slope.

We were very glad to have a forklift at our club shop to unload the heavy pieces.  Good news - not even a scraped knuckle! Now all that is left is reassembly.  The challenge will be to remember which bolt goes where.

Post some pictures there Warren. I'd like to see this bandsaw.

Are you the same Warren that blew a trailer tire bringing me logs?  ;D

The older I get I wish my body could Re-Gen.

Yes. That's me.

I keep on the lookout for more logs.  I have four small white pine ones now but no one seems to want them.  Would make nice knotty pine.

How did that 12' oak log look when you opened it up?

No pictures yet.  I will get some Monday night but only of the pieces.  I will post final pics after the saw is reassembled some time next month.

Glad it was a safe activity!  Seems y'all made a plan and executed it without a hitch.
