would you say if my franklin 130axl skidder is making a loud clunking noise and the wheel acts as if it is trying to lockup and binding that it has broken  planetary? any advice on this ? ive never broken one before but its bad whatever it is. Im afraid to move the skidder bcause I feel its gonna grind something even worse.

It sounds like broken sun gears.its only one wheel? Could be the no spin.if your sure its only one wheel pull the spider off where it sits u will find the problem. You can remove the sun gears and the axle put it back together and take it to the shop. You can  run it in three wheel drive.put it back together in the woods I've done that.

yea only one wheel. front "drivers side" some one was telling me it could be the sun or no spin gear in it. thank you yea. im a take a pic tomorrow n show it on here If I can still figure out the pic load up works again.

Is it a Rockwell planetary ? you can still get parts if it is but like mentioned just tear it down where it sits and see how it looks. Might be worth pulling the covers of all of them after and check it out. One wheel will deff do more work on the front anyway. Good luck hope it goes good  :)

lynde37avery

yep Rockwell. ok thanks im getting my tools together here now after breakfast and gonna go out n do some work on it. ill be finding out what the diagnosis is here shortly.

usually front axle/planetary problems   happen from pushing up in the yard,or using the skidder as a bulldozer, those old "critters" with Rockwell plants need to be used "gently" !! :) :)

got it apart. 3 broken planetaries. sun gear and ring gear. called PBH in NH for parts. they are gonna call me in the morning to notify of the cost. seems to be a simple fix. probably pricey from what i've been told. yep the Franklin will live to pull another day.
and btw that old axle fluid smelled like a Kansas city private escort.

You could also call Harolds logging supply in Harmon Maine, they are real good with parts !!!

check the other ones also those big brass pins break in a rockwell and are a problem area sometimes. Good luck with it anyway. :)

All parts are available from after market parts inc. the sun gears should be around 80 each and the axle gear is about 100. The brass pins should be changed. There about 60.

I replaced the whole spider all the gears on one side with a pr 52 rockwell for 750.00.the pr 67 I've done both sides gears pins. For 650.ive had all parts shipped direct  to me from after market parts.I broke a spindle on the pr 52 and that was 550. To my door.I have not had to change the ring gear on either one. Haven't broken one yet!

ah very good info for me. thanks guys. im going to get quotes from many places. make sure I get the best price and correct parts! I don't quite know what model my axles are. the 52 or 67's? know by my pictures? I figure the guy at the parts shop will let me know when he calls me tomorrow. I am DEFINATELY checking ALL of the wheels now. the brass pins seem to have worn real good on this one. bent and ugly looking. one sheared right in half and into a million bits.

oh yea the ring gear on mine is cracked I noticed it is part of the hub.

Is there a cover that hides the brass pins. With like 16 bolts that you have to take off in order to get them out, or can you see them from outside when it's still all together.if you can see the brass pins from the outside its a pr52. If it has a cover and that cover retains the pins. It could be a number of axles but likely a pr 67 in an old Franklin .then there's rockwell or centrex planitaries. Could be either one. They should ask you to count the bolts retaining the cap. If its the one with a cap.that one has a 2 piece hub that second piece is the ring gear.the hub may look to be one piece. That model separates there's an oring between the 2 sections. Machined surface.when u order the parts ask them to send u the parts schematic. Then you have all the part numbers and a way to see how everything is oriented for future reference.

yea you can see the ends of the 3 brass pins from the outside cover. they have set screws that hold them in tight. like yea 16 bolts hold it on. it looks like the main hub/gear could be part of the hub itself or perhaps pressed in somehow?

I look at the photo of your machine in your gallery. It's a pr52 axle.that axle is used in timberjack 201 205 208. Treefarmer c4. Older Case 680ck back hoe. Case wheel loaders. It's cheaper to rebuild but it's very light. The one in mine I've rebuilt every piece of welded cracks in the axle tube changed the spider in February and the brass pins are leaking again.

I have the schematic of it with all the after market part numbers if your parts guys won't give you one let me know.

Oh sweet, you've been the most help all day thank you. If I don't get a parts breakdown I will defintly hit ya up for one thanks ga jones. so would you say the 67 Rockwell used on the older 230 timberjacks is heavier duty than the 52 rock?
Detroit WHAT?

ga jones

The pr75 was in in the  230 240. There good ones. The pr67 was in early 225s. franklins and c5 treefarmer. Harder to get parts for but yes heavier. The ring gear in the pr52 is separate from the hub. Where the .67is part of the 2 piece hub.

I have a pr52 up front and a pr67 in back.the 67 is a lot heavier. Good luck finding an 8 lug pr75. I've never seen one.I would like to find a pair myself. I just spent 1200. On a set of used 8 lug rims from a 208 timberjack. I don't want to have to do it again on 12 lug.

to stay in the lesser money category but heavier duty I hear the C6 treefarmers pull good. I wanna try one of those with a deutz motor.
so I called around. harolds logging in Maine is by far the best price yet. about $375 for the planets the pins and sun gear. the ring gear I have to get off the hub and get the # off that so I can get the price.

The c-6 with a Deutz is a good machine,i owned a 1986 long frame model for 5 or 6 years before i bought my 660 Franklin, only broke 1 planetary in all those years, nice quiet, easy on fuel,24.5 x 32 rubber . I only bought a powershift machine because "I" was slowing down!! ;D  also the Franklin had a winch and grapple.Harold is a super guy to deal with. Don

I've called Harold's a couple of times and they were very helpful.  They got us back up and running at a reasonable price and even told me a couple of tricks to do the job right!  That really helps us guys doing it after work and on weekends.
