Here's a couple pics of the ice that's left from the breakup and after the ice flow.  We were lucky up on this end of the St John this year.  We had plenty of ice but didn't get a lot of snow this winter, and rain when the "river let go".

A few years ago the ice had jammed above a steel/concrete bridge in Allagash for about a mile and a half. When ice jambs from further up river let go and slammed into the one at the bridge she couldn't hold it and snapped like a twig(I saw the video).  It not only took out the St John River bridge it also took out the bridge over the Little Black river which is upstream a mile from the St John bridge.  :o
The old bridge over the St. John was around 40 feet from the river bed, the replacement is around 60 feet.

Ernest stands about six foot.  :o

Thank God they built a dike on the banks of the river around 25 years ago as the flows of ice and water used to flow into Main Street.  :-/  :-/
