I have asked a Custom's officer and this was his reply....

Yes  and no, it is not an easy thing to do, one needs to have permits
One needs an ATT (Authorization to Transport) also a PAL (Possession & Acquisition).
Both would need be had before entering the country, travel route must be followed and given upawn entering.

The '' no '' part is that they do have a discretionary rule and could if they had any reason too, deny the access of the handgun even if you had a permit, what happenned in Boston would be a reason for denying the acess.
He also mentioned having it shipped there with a dealer with a   FFL: Federal Firearm License  or just to buy one when you get there.... or take the ferry there,...

So if you did have time to get all the paper work in order before one was to leave for Alaska, yes technicaly you could take a hand gun with you but it would not be an easy task.

Not sure what you are getting at. Americans can cross Canada to Alaska with firearms with the proper permits. Handguns should be shipped as getting permits is near impossible. Canadians, to the best of my knowledge, cannot carry in the U.S.

Getting at ???  Answering a questioned asked a while back, and the title of the thread does mention hand gun...  ;)  Hunting rifles is a whole other story.

What Marcel said was, it is sometimes possible for an American to transport a handgun through Canada, providing certain conditions are met. Those are basically the same conditions that a Canadian would have to meet.

The part to pay attention to is the ATT -- Authorization To Transport. It basically lets you move a handgun from point A to point B, in a limited time frame, and following a certain route. You cannot deviate from the route, except in an emergency. You can't go making side trips. And the handgun has to be unloaded and secured -- basically locked up. The ATT is not a carry permit.
