was making a drag yesterday and the c6s motor sound like a wrench hit the fan- I shut it off and cranked it up and it was blowing blueish smoke and sounds like its running out of fuel, but the tank is full. started it with no problem tthis morning- no smoke but still sounds like its running out of fuel ???

Dirty injector or worn out injector tip can cause all kinds of nasty sounding problems. I hope it is an injector problem, they are easy to sort out.  Should be able to pull all the injectors and take them to a shop that specializes in injectors and pumps and they will be able to get you turned around.  One easy check before you yank everything, change out all your fuel filters first.  Sometimes a fuel starvation problem caused by a partially blocked filter can seem like an injector issue.

My c5d was acting up a few months ago. It would run good for about a hour then start starving for fuel. I changed the fuel filters and it was still doing the same thing. I took the fuel filter adapter off and seen it was plugged up full of junk where the inlet line came in. Cleaned it out and has been running good since. Worth checking out anyways.

we had that problem on a c5 once. it was a cracked fuel pick up line in the tank. with fuel sloshing around it would open the cut and close it and when it got down to about half full it was about alkl you could do to get back out to the landing empty. took a couple weks of messing around to figure it out.

I don't think its the filters- I changed them last week.

I changed the filter on my Hitachi when it began starving for fuel.  There were a lot of hours on that filter.  Less than 8 hours of run time later the new filter plugged.  Filters are a cheap place start the diagnosis  ;D :) :)

Is it a detroit? If so sounds like it broke a tip off one of the injectors. The slapping noise is the piston smashing the tip apart.

Also could have dropped a valve. If so get ready! They usually break the head.

have you checked fuel pressure? fuel pump?

Is there a fuel bowl or clear housing for the filter?  If so, you may try revving the engine up and look to see if the fuel level goes down in the filter housing.  If it does, there may be algae or some other obstruction in the bottom of the tank.  This happened with a tractor recently.  We pulled the fuel line off of the filter intake (from the tank) and blew air back through it.  The fuel began to flow freely.  Some algaecide was added to the tank.  The tractor runs like new now but ran similar to your description before.  Good luck.

It will stop knocking once the piston breaks down the tip. Is it a detroit ?

It's easy to check if its a detroit.it sounds like it broke a tip. Take the valve cover off. Take a screw driver (while running) hold back the rack at each injector until u don't hear any change. That's the bad one . Then unbolt that one and pop it out. You will see the tip missing

If u never set the rack before better get someone to help with that.

I believe you said before that is a 453 Detroit in your machine. You had better pull off the valve cover and have a look. First have a look at all the valves and springs to see if they are all there and in their right places. If a valve bent it will be lower then the rest and if one dropped then it will be missing or right up to the rocker arm with no clearance. You can check the operation of the injectors with the engine running and by using a large screwdriver push down on the top of the injector (spring part) and hold it down,if the injector is working then you will notice a drop in the rpm as when you hold it down you are stopping that injector from firing. If it has a bum injector it will probally sound like it is running out of fuel. An injector that is over fueling will give you a bad knock and usually a lot of smoke as the cylinder can't burn all of the fuel. Good luck and I hope it's not that serious.

treefarmer87

I hope its not too serious either, Im skidding with the jd tractor now, I haven't had time to look at the skidder
