Somebodies done learned some new tricks.  I usually keep my junk mail pretty much under control.  Unwanted ones I usually block the sender, and create rules from keywords in the message body and block them or others like them from being downloaded from the server.  I have outlook express.  The past couple of weeks I've gotten some junk emails that the from and subject line are just blank.  Outlook express is unable to block these senders.  When you click on properties instead of an address under general properties it just says 'mail message' and (no subject).  You can then click on details and find out the sender, and the return path but that isn't doing me much good to know that as I never answer these anyway.  At this point I have 37 message rules set up for keywords, and a ton of blocked senders. I also have blocked all emails with attachments, I never open them anyway.  The problem is that some of these new tricky emails with no sender or subject are getting through.

I think I got it figured out.  I created a rule that anything that comes in with 'mail message' in the from line instead of a real address  will not be downloaded from the server.  You can't see it but when you go to properties under General it says it's there.in the from space.  Or maybe it just says 'mail message' cause it can't read what's there.  Worth a try anyway.  Getting hard to stay ahead of em.

Beengetting that same email CK. If it works at blocking let me know, I hate that email and the fact I can't block it.

Not sure how your e-mail handler works but if you read the message source you'll get the true ip address. Block it.

At home I use windows 2000 server, yesterday I got hacked into by a very resourceful hacker. Luckily he just changed passwords and didn't delete anything. He left his mark by changing my deskop screen to "you've been hijacked" I changed it to "you've been caught" the logs show where it came from, some college address. I'm sure they won't do anything about it but at least he knows I care. ;)

Jeff

Very well might not have been a college kid. Could have been anyone, anywhere running through a compromised machine. Looking at a source I.P. does no good at identifying or stoping a spammer. Its very easy to cloak or fake an I.P.

Block your own address.  That's how most of the junk gets through,  they type your own email address in as "from",  so your blocker can't keep it out unless you block yourself.  :P
Where the heck is my axe???

Rocky_J

I do not subscribe to the idea of blocking all emails with attachments. You are losing more than you gain with that approach, IMO. Why not just unplug your computer?

I have disabled the 'preview pane' on Outlook Express. Too many spammers have items programmed into their emails that execute automatically when the email is viewed. By disabling the preview pane, I can delete emails without viewing or opening them.

Oh, I was also getting those blank emails a couple weeks ago. Earthlink figured out how to block them so they no longer make it to my inbox. I'm sure your ISP will be blocking the blank emails soon, just in time for the spammers and hacks to come up with a new trick.  :-/

This server has a shadow program installed, part of my sons hobby. I will say they were good, found a unique way to get admin rights.

Ever considered going Unix? Windows servers are a constant challenge for security.

Well, when it comes to servers, I'm pretty much a dummy. However, the forum servers (2) are both unix running Apache, and I am able to limp along and keep things running most of the time.

You dont need to know how to rebuild an automatic transmission in order to keep the fluid levels up and the filter changed.

It was a Unix joke ;). Sometimes on Internet Relay Chat on the undernet network (or others), there are folks (Channel Operators) in certain channels that make reference to using a Unix manual to keep people in line with channel policies (in a role playing way of course)  :D :D.

My son has been after me to set up a Linux server. The Win 2000 server has been a pain, hackers go after it constantly. I have just gotten comfortable with W2000 so have been dragging my feet, this will change that.

I really got lucky as nothing was damaged and this is just a back-up server for work. Staying one step ahead of these jokers is more work than I need.

As far as e-mail spam goes I just change my address every so often. I tried all the anti spam stuff and it's just as much work as keeping a secure server. I have just the opposite feelings about attachments, nothing someone wants to e-mail me is so important to risk the consiquences. If I need a file that bad they can call and tell me they're sending it or ftp it to me.

oldsaw-addict

Thatss why I usually notify someone before I send an email with an attachemnt in it to them, that way I can get their permission to send an attachment and know it wont just be deleted by the filters or anything.  I HATE spam mail so I have 3 email addresses for different things, one for most everything one can think of, one for the forum things, and one for strictly business.

I'd suggest checking your computer for spy ware.  There's a good possibility that some spy ware is installed notifying spammers that you are on-line.  I've been running Norton anti virus, Zone Alarm firewall, and about twice a month I run "Spybot", a free spy ware search and remove utility.  It's also a good idea to set your browser defaults to delete all temporary files and cookies every time you close the browser.

My computer is connected 100% of the time via high speed 2 way satellite and I have probably received less than 20 spam emails in the last 5 or 6 months.

Normal filters aren't working on these.  And they're slipping past spyware programs.

Part of what I've found.

Spammer's Trick #3- Use *NO action* HTML to hide spam words from filters, BUT those spam words wil be clear to the reader. For instance, in an HTML email message, the following HTML expression is meaningless & generates NO action by one's browser --
<abcdefghijk>

Thus the word Viagra might be hidden as follows...
Vi<abcdefghijk>a<abcdefghijk>gr<abcdefghijk>a

The above will be interpreted by a browser as simply Viagra, because it will ignore the meaningless <abcdefghijk>.

Here's a link on how to set up some mail rules in outlook express.  I still havn't figured out how to block the blank ones.  I did find out a lot of the text in these emails are coming in as a PICTURE, instead of WORDS, that's how they're getting it past the spyware and filters.  I found a site that these guys can go to and send up to 20 thousand emails PER HOUR.  It'll also guarantee em that their email can't be tracked.  To clairify, I get very few junk emails.  It's just these tricky ones that I ain't figured how to block yet is ticking me off.

Oh, here's the link.  It may seem complicated but it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.  The only thing is instead of redirecting this junk to a folder I select the box that says, 'Do not download from server'.  Don't want to see em, don't care about em.  But I do like the challange of trying to figure out how to block em.

Rule Number one in the link.  That's the one that'll stop these blank addressed emails.  The more I read it the more it became as plain as day. All legimitate emals you receive should obviously be FROM SOMEBODY.  And if it's from somebody of course it's gonna have an @ in it.  Everybody I've ever seen has got an @ in their email address.  THIS RULE ignors the fact that it can't read the email.  But it does KNOW for an ABSOLUTE FACT that the blank one DOESN" have an @ in it.  So what it does is block anything coming in that doesn't have a readable @ in it.  Problem Solved. :)  I am so happy.

I've tried quite a few email apps and am currently running Eudora on my wife's machine.  A long time ago on my machines, I decided Eudora just didn't cut it anymore.  Outlook express is out since I opt for non ms applications whenever possible and I think spammers target OE in particular.  I went with Mozilla and even use the mailer included.  The latest version is 1.7b and the mailer has filters that beat any I've tried.  Besides, I prefer the browser over IE.  I have five email addresses.  For serious stuff on one, I block everything except for addresses that are already IN my address book.  On the other addresses, I filter to suit the use.  My wife's machine with Eudora, OE and the same email addresses is constantly bugged with spam, but Mozilla's  mail app seldom gets a spam email.  It does take a some trouble setting up and getting used to Mozilla, but seems to be worth it.  Installation is really easy, just dump it into a directory and it will pick up all IE's bookmarks.  When a new beta version comes up just delete the directory and the new version will still get all the old settings.  And its for free.
(Your ISP probably has filters too.  One of my ISPs is pretty good at blocking spam before It gets to me and the other one is absolutely great at it.  I have run a web site for years and can't remember when I've received spam at the address I use there.)

Thought i'd update my junk email battle.  The last few weeks I have only had ONE junk email!!!  At first some of them was getting past my rules.  I wound up deleating OutLook express, and then redownloading it and reset up the rules.  Then I moved outlook express out of my start menu and hid it on my desktop so it would only start when I wanted it too.  Since doing this I have only had ONE junk mail get through, that's right only ONE!!!!!  So, I blocked it and set up another rule with the keywords in the mail.  I'm a cheapstake, 'wonder where the origin of that word came from' .  I have no programs that block or filter email, just what I set up.  Actually looking forward to them coming up with new tricks so I can figure out how outsmart em!!!!!!!!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8)

We just had a 3 day nightmare named "n-case" and tv.180solutions.

My daughter and a freind somehow downloaded n-case and it took right over.I don't believe it is a virus but is a spyware, and we had ads flashing all over the place. The computer would freeze up and sometimes shut down but it was also painfully slow.I tried to uninstall but that does not work.

Finally got rid of n-case around 11:00 last night :-/
