MtnManChris

Hello all.  I wanted to introduce myself.  I'm from Western North Carolina. I have been an infrequent visitor of the forum since we purchased a '96 WM LT40HD24 last fall.  I am finally starting to saw a little more so I may be able to contribute some, and will undoubtedly be picking some more experienced brains around here.

We have a family farm with about 400 ac. of steep woods.  We are trying to diversify some and using the trees on our property to do projects and build a cabin or two seemed like a good idea.  We have had some milling done in the past but trying to get all our logs together and have them milled always is difficult.  We started looking for a mill about a year ago and finally found one in the price range we needed.

About the mill: We found a 1996 WM LT40HD24 it on craigslist and it happened to be less than 10 miles from the farm.  It only had 725 hrs on it, but it had been  "through the woods a few times", and had been sitting out for a while.  Everything ran and operated, but there were some bent parts like the back stops, the blade guide arm was loose from being hit and maintenance was needed.

I spent lots of time on the phone with Woodmizer's amazing parts and repair folks in Indy.  Got everything working, added a debarker, and have been learning to mill.  We have turned out some nice boards, poplar, red oak, birch, maple. Never had so much fun.

Now I am waiting on the Woodmizer service loop to catch up with me.  I hope they can check everything and make some adjustments that I am unsure of.  From everything I have read on the forum and heard elsewhere they are great.

Good to meet everyone.
Have a great day.

Welcome to the forum, Chris.  Congratulations on the mill.  Sounds like you've already got it pretty well dialed in.  I know what you mean about the fun of it.  You've got a good diversity of timber of your parts, and a lot of interesting milling ahead of you.  Looking forward to more posts, with pictures.

Welcome to the Forum, Chris.  I live in Altapass, a small suburb of Spruce Pine, not too far northeast of you, in Mitchell County, near the Blue Ridge Parkway.  I also have a '40 WoodMizer mill, vintage 1995, and am learning how to use it.  You will find a lot of good information here on this forum, from a lot of interesting people.  Take advantage of it.  Best of luck.
