My son turned 3 the first week in Dec, the mylar is still up there (22' to the peak):

A couple of long 2x2 screwed or duct taped together with double stick carpet tape on the end...grab it from the top of the stair landing...eh? 

I'm just thinking of the children.... ;)

We had a birthday balloon on our ceiling for 8 weeks before it decided to float to the floor. Try a tennis ball wrapped in duct tape sticky side out.
There are no problems; only solutions we haven't found yet.

Growing up we had this happen and waited it out. It was kind of funny that when you stoked up the fire in the morning the house would start warming up and the balloon would start climbing again.
