Jeff

I've known about this tree for a long time. I noticed it a few years ago when they were redoing an entrance ramp and adding a lane to 127 south of us. I thought it was going to get bulldozed, but it ended up almost in the corner of where the US-10 entrance ramp comes into US-127. It is still mostly hidden when there is vegetation, but pretty visible in the winter. I think it is some sort of willow, but not at all sure. It sure is distinctive though! It really makes a guy wonder what it would look like if you started sawing it out.  I had the camera this morning when I went to Mt. Pleasant with Tammy, and got her to pull over so I could get some close up photos. I took a couple photos years ago, but from the highway.  I also took a video clip.

That is most definately a group of Ents that started snoozing during a meeting.  It is surprising that they did not stir when the road work was under way  :D

I think it's got some terribly painful disease. It's covered with boils. Did it scream in agony when you touched it? When you took the pictures, did it say "look away I'm hideous!"?.

That's some weird-looking tree! Reminds me of something from "The Wizard of Oz". Any flying monkeys roosting on the limbs? Probably too cold. :)

I think that's a Black Willow. We have lots of them around here. Most have those galls on them here too but not usually that many. Makes them easier for kids to climb.

I was all prepared to stop and plead my case when they were working on the road, when I was thinking it was going to be taken out of there. Once I saw it was staying, I figured there will never be a way to get it, being that it exists in the highway right of way.

Did you look to see if it was opposite branched or alternate branched?  I could not tell for sure from the pictures.  For some reason, I thought box elder.  But, if so, it would have to be opposite branched and the small twigs would be green.  Whatever it is, it is one cool tree!

A couple of twigs I see in the second picture have the orangish color I associate with some willows...

SwampDonkey

Bark appears to fit willow to me and the ends of the limbs seem to terminate with finer ends than box elder. Even has a willow look, although most of our box elder up here are like that to. But I don't think Jeff is far enough south in MI for boxelder, if so it's at the edge. What we have here in NB escaped from people's lawns into unkept back yards and steep slopes of the river valley. Never see it in the woods.

I would say, a ma bear and 3 cubs had a home close to that tree 30 Years ago.   bass wood?  What dose the leaves look like?

A bear climing a tree will put blaze marks on it. Or it was someone  trying to shoot a squirrel with a AK-47. ::)

I agree with Jake, it's a Black Willow, we have lots of them around this area, usually along the rivers!

I've never seen one with those knots all over them.

Strange tree, the video looks like a clip from a horror movie for trees, if trees had horror movies.

All you need to do now is get some more shots form the trees point of view with you approaching the tree with full chain saw gear and saw, add some scary music.....

JuniperBoss

That would be funny  :D.

I've always been told that burls are "tree cancer". One of their cells has a mutation and starts dividing and doesn't stop. I think you should start cutting off burls one by one, soaking them in stabilizer, and sending them to me for examination. I will put them on my rotary examination device and see what I can discover  8)
