We were given one of those motion-detecting drive way alert gadgets for christmas. Small remote unit outside and an audible alarm box in the house. Looked like a good idea, sometimes we are in the back of the house and don't notice a vehicle pulling in the driveway. Installed it on the side of a tree, pointing across the driveway toward the front of the house. Worked good, EXCEPT, some mornings between 8 and 8:15 it goes nuts with false alarms. It took me a couple of weeks to solve the mystery. My house faces northwest, the sensor looks southeast, just right to see the rising sun peek over the peak of the house roof. Sensor goes from shadow to bright sunlight, thinks it sees something warm and moving, and sounds the alarm.. Dang smartalec electronic gadgets TOO smart.  ::)

I have one also P. W.  Alarm went off one night, looked out my window and saw a person walking in the yard at 2 am.  Grabbed the first thing I could find which was a flash light ( big one).  Slide the glass door open to find him looking in my wife's car.  He spotted me and took off across the field.  I chased him all over the field until I finally caught him.  He took $50.00 out of her car.  I did what was necessary  to assure he would not return.  So just have patients with it and adjust it where it will not have false alarms and it will work fine.  I have a Dakota gate alarm.  It has a range of about a mile.  I also put it in one of my deer stands and caught someone hunting at night. 8)

I need to get one of those for the back of my garage where the sawmill is parked for the winter.

There's no door there, just a big 10x10 opening!

I've gone out there before and saw footprints in the snow that I didn't recognize.  Never did figure out who they were.

Thanks for the reminder Piney!

I have two systems.
One has two senders along my long drive. The sender sets off the doorbell and usually can tell if an animal (deer or turkey) sets it off because of the time space between the two senders. Wouldn't want to be without it, as it helps to know when someone drives up the drive.

A second system is behind the house, and usually just lets us know if a deer or turkey is poking around in the yard.

We have a couple of dog bells but they aren't exactly reliable. Lots of false alarms. They do go off real well when the deer come up to feed.

I was born and raised on small family farm in NH.  Mom and dad could never afford anything like electronic alarms due to having 8 siblings and myself to feed.  However, the thing we had as an alarm was those dang Canadian grey geese.  They were meanest things this side of the Mississippi.  If you didn't know they were around, they would sneak up behind you, grab your pant leg in their beak and slap the snot out of you with their wings.  Many unwelcome guests would leave the property with those geese chasing them.  And, you'd had better be a good runner otherwise they would keep slapping you with their wings until they tired.  By then then you were in so much pain you couldn't wait to get away.   I miss those days... :-\  Roger

I use them to keep deer and other wild things out of the garden, leave the alarm out side too. Get them from H/F. Its scares them so bad they don't come back. They think the Loch Ness monster almost got them. 8)
