Stihl 362 air filter system
« on: January 11, 2013, 07:21:05 pm »
Anybody having trouble with the double air filter on the Stihl 362? I'm kind of upset with this system, Twice now I have cleaned the airfilter and found splinters had penetrated the outer filter...so many that it was ridiculous! They get stuck half way through the filter, looks like a porcupine. When the 2nd filter comes off there is tale tell sign that there is a problem with sealing and dust has gone into the intake. I clean this filter routinely, and always check how everything seals. I really don't understand why they had to make the switch to this filter. Why not put the K&N style filters like a 44 I had several years ago? Surely I am not the only person who is having this problem. Our Stihl dealer in town just sells the saws...not really any experts, plus I usually work past closing so I can't  call them. Thanks in advance for any insight to my problem. Heck, who knows...maybe I got a factory defective air filter???

If i had dust in the intake i would be very concerned, which you are. I know i couldn't run it knowing dirt was getting into the engine though the filter until i found the problem.

I just got a 362 a few weeks ago. Haven't actually put it to a log just yet, but I'll be watching for this issue. Hopefully not. I'll keep checking back to see if theirs any more info.

Thank you fellas for your replies! I will take a few pics 2moro and post them. I wish someone from Stihl would respond to this thread. The pics are going to show a failed air filter system and I wouldn't doubt somesort of a re-call is in need to fix the problem. The hood on the 362 is going to make it nearly impossible to just swap out the 361 air filter...I don't know really what can be done. Thanks again for your replies...be sure to check your intakes.

Your Stihl dealer is your best bet for some attention from Stihl. He/she has a regional rep.

Doubt any Stihl reps are poking around the internet on Forums looking for problems to solve. ;)

I don't get to my Stihl dealer often but this is a good excuse to stop by for a visit. I'll see what he says.

Digging this old one up. Was hoping there was an answer here. I'm in need of a new filter, and if there is something to replace this, and function better, it would be good to know.

Did you find a solution?  I just bought a used MS362 non m-tronic and it has the old style filter.  The new ones come with the HD filter (round one).  I looked in to changing over to that and it is possible.  Just need a few more parts...the back plate etc.  The dealer said it would be about $60 to change it over.

We have an early 362 that does them same. The filter gets porcupined with splinters and I have seen alot of dust and debris get past the filter on this saw as well. To be honest, I'm not sure how it's lasted this long with this filter setup.

Since the warranty is over with this saw I plan to make a few slight adjustments on this ms362 and I may get the HD filter setup to start with. Glad I seen this thread as I always wondered if the newer filter could be adapted to the early ms362's.  :)

Here's what I mean about this saw getting dust past the filter.
