I turned some duck calls this weekend to give to family and friends for Christmas. The duck hunters who have gotten one previously say they sound great. I wouldn't know a good one from a bad one. They sound like ducks to me, though.   ;D

Clockwise from the left, the wood is Walnut, Redbud and Cherry.

Thanks, Woodey. I used Deft Satin Lacquer in a rattle can for the finish.

Are there plans available to follow?

I enjoy duck and goose hunting, woodworking and have been looking for a reason to buy a lathe.  This may be it.

Nice job and those duck calls will mean more to your friends than any they ever bought.  Ain't woodturning fun? 8)

The turning instructions are online at the Craft Supplies USA site. I use the plastic reeds.

http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/4/-/12/57/-/5287/Turners-Select-Game-Call-Plastic-Reed/duck+call+instructions

They are really easy to turn. Cut a 1.5" square blank 6 1/8" long. Measure 4" from one end, mark a line and cut on the tablesaw or chop saw leaving a 4" and a 2" blank.

Drill a 3/4" hole through the 4" blank (I use a Forstner bit and drill from both ends to keep the hole centered) Drill a 1/2" hole through the 2" blank. (the instructions say a 31/64" hole but a 1/2" works great and is a more common size)

Using the game call turning kit, mount the long blank on a pen mandrel and turn per the instructions. Sand it smooth on the lathe and remove it. Now mount the short blank, turn it per the instructions. It needs a tenon with a groove for the o-ring.

Put the two pieces together, apply finish and it's done.

Thanks, Charlie. Yes, turning is fun. It's almost instant gratification, too, which is a lot of the appeal. An hours work or less produces one of those duck calls and you're right, my friends will cherish them for a long time.

MY neighbor makes and sells these, mostly to fans of Louisiana State University (purple and gold are LSU colors)  ;D He says the wood comes from some special trees on the LSU campus specially developed to have purple and gold layers of wood.  ::)
