Hi, I have a HT 131 Pole Saw, The manual says it should max out at 10,500 RPM, I checked it with my Tach and it is only getting to about 9,800 sometimes ten, If I hold it long enough it starts to cut out or break up like there is a rev limiter on it or something. I tried turning the H Speed screw and nothing happens Rpm's barley Change if at all. I can only turn them less then a full turn.

It's obviously got limiters on the carb then if you can't turn them .You can take them off but if it runs okay I wouldn't get real concerned about 700 RPM .

JOE.G

Clockwise is leaner and counter clockwise is richer correct? Is there a safe setting since I messed with it and since it has a limiter can't set it correctly?

You are correct, counter clockwise is richer, clockwise is leaner. I would turn it out (richer) to its stop and leave it there. It should be fine. Like Al said, few hundred rpm isn't much to worry about. It will run at less rpm in the cut anyway.

I did turn it all the way clockwise ( As far as it would turn with the stops anyway ) and it ran bad, I then did turn it all the way rich Counter Clockwise and it did run better then lean. Is it worth bringing it to the dealer to adjust? I don't want to ruin the saw it cost quite a bit. Or do you think I wouldn't notice much of a difference if I just turned it all the way rich? Thanks

I think if you read this it will help you a lot. This explains carb adjustments quite well. The audio files also give you a good idea of what to listen for. They are a chainsaw but still give you a reference point. As for your saw, try turning it all the way out, then cut a branch or log with it. How does it run while cutting? If it's smooth and seems to cut well with good power you're right where you should be.

This saw has the 4 Mix Engine they sound and feel different then a Reg two stroke saw motor, plus with the limiter it cuts out so its hard to here it rev out.

How do you tune a saw with Ignition cut out?

I took it to the dealer today, he adjusted it to a little over 10,000 Rpm, It is turned full rich against the Adjustment limiter. I wasn't to far off.

You know a pole saw really is just like any other two cycle engine .If you are going to err slightly with carb adjustments it's better to err on the rich side .

The thing might "blubber " a little bit until you get into the cut then it leans itself out and puts out the power .

I've seen a lot of people think that just because a chainsaw is running at top RPM believe that's where it should be set .In reality though it often  cannot supply enough fuel when under the most load and those RPM's fall off drastically so they have not gained a thing except perhaps take the risk of burning up the saw from runing lean .

Besides with a pole saw it's highly unlikely you're going to get in a speed race of cutting cookies out of cants any way .

JOE.G

I would much rather this saw be on the safe side, that is why I asked, I paid a lot of money for a saw that I don't use all that often, but when I do need it I have it. And there def wont b any racing with this one.

Someone had mentioned to me that the RPM's should be checked with the power head off, Anyone hear of this?

Quite frankly I never paid much attention to RPMS for several reasons .First I tune by ear and secondly conditions such as temperature ,altitude and humidity affect running conditions .

In addition in the case of a port altered engine which I have several those factory numbers mean exactly nothing .

FWIW I know a good many saw racers and builders of hot saw engines and few if any rely on a tachometer .Although I will admit it's a nice tool if for nothing else as a reference . ;)

JOE.G

I used today for a couple hours trimming my favorite trees, Pin Oaks Now that I am bleeding all over I must say that the saw ran very well, A little bit of trouble On a hot restart but not bad.

Well that's typical of most engines that are set a tad rich .You about have to hold the throttle open a tad bit if they are hot .
