I am milling Pine with my csm. I currently am just creating a cant and then flatsawing slabs out of the cant..... Is this the right way to saw pine?

Also, i have some rock maple and white birch to saw. Cant and flatsaw these as well?

I am working with roughly 12 to 16" logs.

I appreciate your advice.

Jamie, yes depending on what you want.Insted of wasting wood with thick slabs mayby cut barksided boards, then edge on a table saw, until you get down to the cant. Frank C.

Because the logs are relatively small, I get down to a cant by removing three slabs. Two parallel and one perpendicular to that. I then cut three "live edge" boards off these slabs. I cut one 12" log and recovered 2 - 1x6 and 5 - 1x8.

My saw cuts nearly a 3/8 kerf, so I think I did ok.
