this never happened before. one of my expert operators had my forklift stuck in a rut. was really revving it back and forth to get out of the rut. the stack caught on fire. shoved a fire extinguisher down the top and put it out.

the machine has been idling too much lately. guess the exhaust temp was so high it ignited the carbon and some oil in the exhaust. I guess the same thing as a chimney fire in a stove pipe.

close call. good thing it didn't burn up the whole machine.

I have seen it happen on the tug boats used to move our submarines around the harbor several times.  On the big diesels it is not fun.

Each time I have had a stack fire it came with some sort of engine failure that put fuel or oil into the exhaust.
