Before Chain Saws...

A little history...........

Check this one out.  Imagine any of this generations young men attempting this!

When the Northwest logging industry was still young...

Just look at the length of the hand saw they needed...

...and look at the size of the heavy duty axes...

The work required very strong and courageous men...

After a tree was felled the real work began - a week or more to cut it up...

Maneuvering the logs down the mountain to the train was a complex job...

Some of the logs were larger than the train engine...

A hollowed out log became the company's mobile office...

Hollowed out logs were also used to house and feed the crews...

It's amazing how they handled those logs with so little equipment. Nowadays it seems it would be just as tough to handle them.

If work still had to be done the way it was back then there certainly certainly would be no shortage of jobs. Even just back to when two man chainsaw's were used. Men were men.

Ok that cracked me up.

I saw a Redwood trailer that was used as an office at the fairgrounds once.  look similar to the truck interior.  Scary how old those trees are.....

VERY nice pics. If your ever out near Eureka Ca. check out the Scioto Lumber Museum. It is on the grounds of the former PalCo plant.
