Cocoon, the awakening.

Walking in the back yard, while picking dead sticks on the lawn, I happened to be under a red oak.

I found this purplish cocoon, about 2" in length, just laying exposed on top of the ground. It was muddied up some because we had a lot of rain this week.



I wanted to see if there was life. With a little rap on his tail end....;D

 Ive seen those same cocoons here in NY of at least very similar. Do you know what it is?

At this point I suspect some kind of giant silkworm moth with eye spots on the wings. A luna, polyphemus or cecropia moth. I have him in a jar, so some day we may find out. ;D
