Hi Folks,

Welcome to the Great Firewood Shoot-Out!  32 MACHINES competing in 2 days.  The Great Firewood Shoot-Out taking place at the Paul Bunyan Show in Cambridge, OH, October 5-7, 2012.  The event will run on Friday at 1 PM and Saturday at 10 AM only.

Friday October 5, 2012

9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
Wood 101: Wood as a Raw Material. Wood is a wonderful raw material to work with, but it does have some unique features that can lead to problems while processing and in use. This seminar will discuss some of the main issues related to the use of wood and how to avoid associated problems. These issues include a understanding of water in wood, how to measure water in wood, why wood shrinks and swells, maintaining moisture content of dry wood, the variability associated with wood and abnormal wood and its impact on processing.

Presenter: Brian H. Bond---an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virgin Tech.


11:30 AM to 1:00 PM
Drying for the Small Operator. This seminar will cover the basic information that a small operator should know and consider regarding the drying of hardwood and softwood lumber, including suggested drying methods for small operators, the basics of how wood dries and defects associated with drying.

Presenter: Brian H. Bond---an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virgin Tech.


3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Firewood A to Z.  Take this class if you would like to make sense out of firewood, from the buyer, seller, producer or landowner perspective.  All aspects of firewood will be discussed; with the steps to produce seasoned, dry wood and how to get the most out of it.  Whether you are a landowner, logger, processor, hauler or end user, your questions will be answered and methods to make your work easier and more productive will be presented.  Learn about the equipment you may need and how to make sense and possibly a dollar in the hot firewood markets.

Presenter:  Mark Havel is an engineer, forest landowner, founder and Pres. of Future Forestry Products Inc and the originator of the modern log arch line.  Mark is from Oregon in the Pacific Northwest, where he teaches classes and leads field day workshops on forestry tools and techniques.

Basics of Hardwood Lumber Grading. This seminar will introduce participants to the standard grading rules of the National Hardwood Lumber Grading Association and demonstrate how they are applied.

Presenter: Brian H. Bond---an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virgin Tech.


11:30 AM to 1:00 PM
Methods for grade sawing hardwood logs. This session will cover how to apply the grade sawing technique to hardwood logs on a portable sawmill. The session will start by presenting the concepts of grade sawing followed by the actual application of the concepts to hardwood logs using a portable sawmill. This session will require attendees to actively participate in applying the knowledge presented!

Chainsaw Sharpening and Use Techniques.  Whether you have a few hours or a few years behind a chainsaw, this class will help you cut more efficiently, effectively and safely with a sharp chain and the right techniques for felling, limbing and bucking.  Does that leaning tree bother you?  Working in tight stands where everything hangs up?  Does your saw cut straight and fast?  Take this class and step it all up a notch, for the beginner or experienced sawyer, happiness is wood on the ground.
