In Colorado last October Marty and I were completely dependent upon seep water. Not only as our water source but as a safe to drink water source. After we had been pumping for several days, Marty noticed a cow plop upstream from us.  :-\  Not a very pleasant discovery or thought. We were using a Katadyn Vario pump/filter and a also SteriPEN, either of which should have been sufficient. The Katadyn did an excellent job of pumping and producing clear water and the microfilter supposedly removes all of the bad stuff. The SteriPEN produces UV rays which changes the DNA of bacteria and prevents it reproduction. No reproduction means the end of the bacteria.

Today I sterilized both units with Clorox and replaced the filter. The O rings got a nice coating of silicone, so both are now ready for action.

I failed to mention that neither of us had any ill affects from the water.  We were using about 1½ gallons per day.  One for drinking and the rest for coffee and re-hydrating our freeze dried meals.

We have a steripen, and love it. It's our primary water sterilization method on backcountry canoe trips.  Second is filtration by pump, or iodine in the form of polar pure.  The Iodine is surefire, always works, you just gotta do it right.

We filled these with the Katadyn, and then used the SteriPEN.  A double whammy.

Our dryland log sort was at Mowich creek at the base of a shear cliff and the creek comes out of a gorge with sheer walls on either side and Mountain Goats were ever present on both sides..We ran several hundred feet of 1¼" black pipe from the creek to the dry sort for fire protection and to wet down the shake and shingle piles.
It was also the drinking water for the crew and we all drank regularily from a garden hose plumbed in off a tee.
Bear was one of the buckerman and he split rails and firewood in the slack time.He told me that he went up the creek one day after a rain to see why the water was slowed down and cleared branches and other debris from the intake and then walked up a little further past the intake and saw the remains of a dead goat in the creek, half rotten and mostly hairless.

He dragged it out and went back to work and never said a word to us cause it was already done :)
