Does anyone know for sure if the bees actually leave the paper nests when the weather starts getting colder!

I was told "they do", but my source likes to set people up for a practical joke whenever he can! :o

Ours do but they are not New Yorkers.  After they leave the nest, they will huddle up in a confined place for the Winter.

We brought a beautiful paper hornet's nest into the house one winter - the bees came out when it warmed up  :o  Mom was not pleased  ::)

That's kind of what I was thinking.

When it warms up, they think it's Spring again.

I had one in my pick-up that start to buzz late one fall early winter   :o  Not really a good idea , it went from the back seat to the box in a hurry, it spent the winter outside under da shed.  :)

Bumble bees usually go in the ground or maybe some wall insulation. What usually happens to most of those hornet's nests is the weather gets them or a skunk if it's low to the ground. And I don't doubt a bear might get one now and again when the air gets too cold for the hornets to fly. I see a lot of them torn up in the fall.

Suppose to drop down into the 20's by late next week. That'll slow'm up some. :D
