So I'll open the can of worms what is your opinion on the best 440? and why. Also problems with all model's I know the "C"s were known for chewing up clutch's. But what was better about the "D"s?

I absolutely love my JD440 It is so Darn easy to work on.. Simple too run.. And parts are pretty simple to come by.. not always cheap, but pretty easy to find

I have heard alot about the "B" model being about the best one made. What are the big problem's with the other ones. I've heard about the Clutch issues with the "C" model but, anything about the "D" ? I need to be on egg shells about?

I've been in the logging industry all my life and have owned and run alot of different equipment.  The John Deere 440B is one of the finest machines ever put in the woods.

We had a 440D in the shop last year with a transmission issue. Lost second gear completely and ticked in a couple others. Had a hard time trying to get parts. Checked bone yards all across the country. In the end we had a two gears made in a machine shop in Syracuse. Over all I like the machine, ran it a little around the lot. Ran a 440A a bit a couple years ago. Operator friendly and nimble in the woods. Weaves through the woods easier than my TJ. Fairly easy to work on.
