has anyone had any experiance milling plantation Paulownia?

a bloke contacted me today about milling some thinnings, and his main logs for him.

there are about 3000 or more thinned treesbetween 4" and 10" daimiter, and 4000 or so trees 10" - 14" diamiter.

i have only got experiance cutting aussie hardwood and slash pine, how dose this timber react, how dose size effect the way it mills,

id imagine a bandsaw would be ideal for this job due to the small size of the trees. and if its worth it i would consider buying one for this job. due to the large number of trees.

any advice would be mutch apreciated, i have to look at it next week.

Paolawhat? What's it like?    I think your just looking for a excuse to buy a bandsaw, like if I got a bunch of big logs I'd be buying a swingmill .  Steve

I doubt those 4 inch trees would produce much, But depends what it will be used for too. I did a search on paulownia on here. Lots of posts to wade through. Not much of that grows around here.   ;D

I love the wood.  It saws like butter and is very light.  It does not warp, check and seems to be pretty rot resistant.  Termites here do not like to eat it and it is very pretty.  It is not durable for flooring or hard use areas but makes pretty stuff.  You can make a large beam and let it weather and have a very large fireplace mantle that only weights a few pounds.  Carvers are starting to like it here because it is so stable and light.  It has a pretty sheen when worked and very pronounced grain pattern.  I sell it as fast as I can get it but only get 2 or 3 mbdft a year of it.  You can use the small logs for log furniture but the 10 inch stuff will make good boards.  Here a 10 inch log is only about 6 years old.  I have planted some here on the farm.

Soft, light and lots of stress.  There is a big "straw" that runs up through the center that can cause issues if isn't centered.  Local guy grows them and brings me several a year.  Oh, it stinks when it is cut.

I've heard it said that trees are just giant vegetables, and you'll know this for sure when you cut up Paulownia.  Like celery.
