Turpentine still at Austin Cary Forest
Let me try this again for the third time.  On Monday last week I took a few of my students to an experimental UF farm in Citra, Fl to get some instruction on soils from soil scientist, Dr. Rex Ellis.  He explained how to determine erosion amounts, locate seasonal high water tables, soil permeability, and soil textures.
After leaving Citra, we headed to Waldo, where Austin Cary Forest is located.  Austin Cary is the forest where the UF forestry students are trained and where they perform experiments.

We were there to mainly learn about soils.  The pine flatwoods have predominantly Spodosols under them.  Learning about the soil was cool, but I could have spent a much longer time walking around looking and learning in the forest.  They have a diesel powered circle sawmill on site as well as a turpentine still.  There were catfaced trees with Herty Cups, other metal resin collection tins and even plastic bags attached to poly pipe fittings that were installed into the bases of longleaf and slash pines (I assume this is similar to the way maples are tapped).

Anyway, this was a worthwhile day and I wanted to share a bit about it.

These worthwhile learning trips will always be remembered by your students.  They may not remember exactly "what" they learned but they will remember "that" they learned.

I remember many FFA trips for forest, chickens, cattle, etc.  The details are long forgotten, but the basics are still there.

Knowing about soils is a very important part of practicing forestry.

These are pics of two different pitch collection systems.  Also, I'm not able to rotate the pics.

The picture rotation thing is likely a function of your phone, which I assume is how you took the pictures.  I find that when that happens, I can open the picture in the phone, rotate it and save.  Then rotate it back to how it belongs and save again.  Then it will be formatted to orient correctly.
