But, then you should have a stump there for the tree that used to be there.

I cut a Cherry like that last Fall.  I kept the twisted section and started to mill it this Spring.  Starting to hollow but will still get some nice curves off the good wood.

Id Say That looks like Cyclone damage but I have only ever seen pics of it from plantations in Fiji that a plantation forester showed Me while he was overhere studying Mate  ;) just think of 80% of a plntation looking like that tree  :o :) :)

MM, I am thinking along the same lines.  I have seen some pines that look similar due to hurricane damage.
maybe not.

I would be tempted to put a lot of blame on the scar at the bottom of the tree.  It might be fusiform rust, but it could also be that a skidder ran over it and damaged the tree when it was younger and left the tree bent over and twisted.  Age has the thing trying to correct itself and it finally got sorted out and is headed for the sky.

Magicman

Yup, that one side didn't get the nutrients from the root system that the other side got, so the good side outgrew the bad side.  It just sorta screwed itself into the sky.

Maybe a female tree just trying to show her flare....... thinking throwing her hip out a bit will attract another tree. ::)

Can you tell I have teenagers and have been dealing with the "attraction" issues? :)

Don't think so, she'd have some of her bark missing around the middle.  And maybe a nail (metal one i mean) or two sticking out here or there.

That tree is worth more then the large one on the right side of the photo.

I was just cleaning up pics on my computer and re-discovered this little guy...

It was in a bunch of logs I virtually got given for helping a guy out on a fence job, I took the good straight logs through the mill first...

in preference over that bent one. In the pic of the straight log, you might just be able to see sawmark lines down the face of the log, well at this point the log was giving me 3 clear of bark 6x2 boards across the face and each one was coming off straight as a line...

Anyway that ain't the story, I still regret not getting to that bent log  :'( I wanted to slab her as she lay to make seats and then set them up around a fire pit out the back so folks could all sit around the bonfire on cold winter nights...oh well :-\ :(
