i just bought a 5100s, and from what i can tell from the specs in the book, the only differences is the saw rpms and weight, the 5100 being 9/10ths of a pound lighter. what did they use in the saw to make it lighter, and will it have any effect on durability?
thanks
jon.

the 5100/5105 uses magnesium for the crankcase, thus the lighter weight. the 5100/5105 also has .4hp more power than the 510. BTW, the 510 is a nice homeowner saw. the 5100/5105 is a pro saw.

The 5100S should actually be more durable as it's better built (pro grade) compared to the 510 (part time use).

Magnesium case, better bearings etc. Of course this is why it costs more, but it should be a better saw as well.

i was thinking the hp increase was a direct response to the increase in RPMs. so the diff is plainly in the craincase mg vs al?

As was mentioned the 510 is a home owner saw. It is built like a sandwich with the crank shaft as filling. The pro 5100/5105 is more conventional with a vertically split crank case and separate cylinder.
The 5100 is a more durable design with more power and speed. Be careful leaning it out to the advertised max of 14,500 rpm, easy to over do it and smoke the piston. We are a distributor, have seen more than a few failures.

The PS5105 is now the smallest professional model, the PS3410TH has been dropped.

The 510's are the marketed as the home owner versions...I don't think I have ever seen a negative post or a posting of an issue on the 510's. They look like a solid machine too.

i picked up one of those 34s, not too impressed. felt like a toy built with hard brittle plastic. even for 170 bucks i put it back down. i was wondering about the 420, guess ill know when i put my hands on one.

not correct....both have vertically split, pro-style construction.

the porting is different bw the two saws, hence the power difference.

No, but the power to weight retio pulls it firmly out of the pro saw segment.
