I would have a conversation with your markets about the shears. The markets up here don't want sheared wood. Too much fibre damage in the logs, drove them out of the woods. Hotsaws or bar saws might be a better move.

forget the shear no one will buy your logs. i had one i know what they will do. with out a grapple skidder your not gaining much

oldseabee

I agree that the shear is a bad bet unless you are only doing pulpwood or firewood, then if you get a chance to do some logs you are screwed. Is the Bell a super T, UltraT, or UltraC? I worked for Bell for a while and have some tech info in case you go that way.

SwampDonkey

As snowstorm said, a grapple is what is used or a forwarder. Your not gaining much ground if you continue with a cable skidder with a buncher or processor. Ever try to hook chokers in a pile of bunched logs?

i bet its not easy hooking those chokers, oldseabee, it is a ultra T, i might get a 240 timberjack grapple skidder a friend has for $7500 before i get a feller..... the man that has the TJ has the bell also, he wants $6500 for the ultra T, new pump and bar/chain in the head. The next job i got coming up is a clearcut, it has a lot of smaller stuff, a cutter would come in handy :)

An Ultra T for 6500 should be a heck of a deal unless its ragged out. I have a super T that I wouldnt sell for double that. A bell can help in alot of ways even with your cable skidder. It can place the cut end of the trees on a stump so getting chokers underneath the tree is never a problem. A Bell will run alot cheaper as well the most any 4 wheel bunchers. I recommend getting a 3/4 inch bar and chain to replace the 404 pitch if it hasnt been changed already. My conversion kit was little of 500 dollars a year ago and have used 5 chains that im still using today. I cut large oak timber on a regular basis and only regret I have is not getting it sooner. Tire chains are a must as well, even on flat ground Ive found. If the timber is in fact smaller you might be able to save time by choking 2 smaller trees with one choker. Either way good luck ;)

treefarmer87

its already been converted :) alot of people dont like a bell.. i do i think they are really handy. thanks jeremiahdixon

Sounds like a really good deal to me. If its actually an Ultra. Should have joy sticks if so. If its not an Ultra will be Super....still really good machines. One thing to look for in Supers are 2 or 4 bolt turn motors on the wheels. Take one of the two plates off the very front of the machine, between the head and directly below your grill. In my honest opinion 4 bolt is alot better. Will be easy to look in there and tell. I really like my bell. People that tend to not like them are in fear of turning them over. I got over that real fast, the hard way. Before I ever even cut a tree with it while unloading it the first day I got it  ;D I have a few times since then as well but is no big deal. Remember that seatbelt and dont let flat ground fool ya...trust me.

treefarmer87

yep ill deff wear my seatbelt. ill just be careful with it.

Gday

the BEll would be a good option and I have always liked them cheap, simple to work on and lite which makes them cheap and easy to shift from site to site  ;) there where alot of blokes down here and in NZ that use them with the Bell static delimber to drop, limb, top off and set into skids but I like the look of the stripper delimber's www.stripperdelimber.com i also like the fact that they do not have a motor or hydraulics to worry about either  ;) ask your mate if he will do a package deal on both the Jack n the Bell you never know Mate  ;)

Gday

One of my mates has a bell delimber down here but he only uses it on small pulp logs on large jobs and motor manuals everything else but it has done alot of work for him over the years though mate  ;) you  also just carry a remote in the bell logger to open and close the limbing knifes and activate it  ;)

heres a clip for you too I found Mate  ;)   http://youtube.com/watch?v=l1k0M70juHk&feature=related

That dangle head Bell is sweet. A lot of the guys that have them around here have newer and bigger machines but keep those for backups. They dont wanna part with em. Better make the pair deal and get that grapple.

Your rite there Buck alot of them keep em in the shed here also theres one mill north of me I know has imported afew 225 loggers in from both NZ and Africa in the last few years they reckon its just to hard to find em here along with the fact that they want a min of 30 to 45k for an older logger you can land a fully rebuilt one for that price that looks n runs like a Brand New one from Africa you just have to know the rite people  ;)
